So I was just asked if I can make a carousel pony, and to be honest, I hadn't ever thought of how the base and pole making goes.  What should I look for, what is used?  Anything special I should know about gluing it in place?  Anything else you think a beginner to the carousel craft should know?

Thank you oodles in advance!!

pandabear_chan uses these http://www.nationalartcraft.com/subcategory.asp?gid=3&cid=208&scid=815
I just got an order in for her and they look neat and come apart in the middle so you can put them on the pony :)

Ah cool!  Thank you - if worse comes to worse I can order enough to fill the $20 minimum.  I'll see if I can find another site where I can order another one individually =D

Ooh, neat! Too bad the shipping charges to Europe are rather high, otherwise I would have bought some already!

I made one with a wooden base and a wooden dowel covered in clay. Works in a pinch!

I have depending upon scale used knitting needles or gotten unturned brass tubing from the local hardware store to use.  If you pony is standing either of those will work well as you do not need to support the pony mid air.  Another great way to get poles is to check your local thrift shops, most carousel music boxes are on the same kind of pole kits you get from National.  I have used those a few times.

I've done two carousel ponies.  One of them used the same technique as NoD's pony - wooden dowel and clay and a base.  The other one was also done with a dowel, but the "pole" was inserted through the lid of a wooden box, with the box becoming the entire base.
