Tails Of Rust - Help?
« on: March 26, 2015, 02:28:28 PM »
Hello folks!

New to things, and I have a pony here with some rather visible tail rust.  I'd like to get her cleaned up, but not sure what works.

What is the tried and true method for cleaning up tail rust?

Thank you!

Toothpaste! Remove the head, take out the tail and get rid of the washer (that's typically the part that rusts), and rub toothpaste into the tail where the rust is. You may have to do it a few times to get it all out. The toothpaste will dry out the hair, so wash and condition it like normal.

Well first you're gonna have to pop her head off. If the rust on her tail is rather prominent, she may have a coat if it inside her, too. Take out her tail and remove and toss the rusty washer. I usually just shampoo and condition tail rust. If she has rust gunk inside her, use an old toothbrush to scrub her out.

I try toothpaste first, but CLR (with gloves of course) is always effective!

If pony's head won't come right off you can dunk her in hot water to soften her head glue or make the plastic bendy enough where her head comes off easier.

Another non-drying-of the hair solution for de-rusting (if you can get the tail out & rid the bad washer) is to soak it in laundry detergent for an hour or more, then scrub the rust upon the tail with a tooth brush. Laundry detergent (especially the clear goopy kind) seems to release it, if you soak. Doing it more once may be required for severe or ancient rust.

If the washer is not rusted trough you can try to soak it in vinegar for a while and then rub it with a rough sponge to get rid of exess rust. :)

The washer was coated and thoroughly rushed, as well as the pincer thing around the tail.  Removed both so c there wouldn't be more rusting.

Yeah, it was pretty dark, and very visible outside of the body.  Didn't get all the stain out of her tail, but all of the exposed tail is back to the right color.
