So, glittery symbols
« on: March 18, 2015, 08:53:24 AM »
What kind of glitter do people use for glitter symbols?

I have two part-finished customs sitting on the table right now, and I want to use glitter, but the only kind I have is kiddy craft glitter, and the flakes are rather large

Where would I find really fine glitter? Anybody have a particular brand they use?
Thank you *wyvernchick* for my lovely avvie!

I've used two methods for glittery symbols before -- Folk Art makes a "paint" called Extreme Glitter, with a very fine glitter that is excellent for symbols.  The only bad thing is that it comes in a limited variety of colors, but it's very easy to apply.

I've also used Martha Stewart fine glitter before, which comes in a huge array of colors and finishes (neon, iridescent, and metallic).  Both the fine glitter and the Extreme Glitter are available at a bunch of different craft stores and online as well (Amazon sells pretty much all of the Martha Stewart glitters and a limited selection of Extreme Glitter paints, but you can also buy Folk Art products online directly in a much larger selection.  They also have a bunch of other paints and supplies you can buy there, like Ceramcoat, Mod Podge, and Gallery Glass).

I tend to use micro glitter mixed with a gloss sealant.

I use micro fine glitter, you can find this at most art supply stores.  I use a triple thick gloss for the base then while it's wet sprinkle the micro fine glitter over it.  I prefer to leave the glitter exposed as apposed to placing a clear coat over it, it seems to sparkle more without a sealant over the top. ;)

A cheap version I use is a glitter paint crystal by craft smart. It dries clear and shows off the glitter but it doesn't covered the whole surface with glitter. It might take a few coats to cover it all.

They didn't work for me, but they were only cheep!

I use micro glitter that I got from Hobby Craft :) You can also use nail art glitter as that is very fine as well.

Hasbro mixed silver glitter in with all the colours to make them shine more ;)

I'm glad you mentioned HC pinkkittywinks, as that is where I will be going tomorrow to (hopefully!) find some.

I will need (for a planned future project) some gold as well, so they'd better carry both colours or else there may be some toys thrown out of the pram by me

I had actually noticed the silver mixed with other colours myself. Not sure if I will do that, as these are 'lookalike' customs rather then 'faithful copy' ones. But as the two that are waiting for me to get the glitter both need only silver, that won't be an issue right now - though they may well be once I start with the glitter and paint, LOL

And like you Darkhorse, I probably won't put a seal over the glitter either. LOVE those Glory customs!

I've used Sakura Gelly Roll pins before. One thing I did learn with them is you have to use a spray sealant on them first and even then there is the possibility of the work coming off. I haven't used the pens in a while and the last custom I used them on was this girl (though you really can't see the shimmer except for the eyes)
