Why is Rapunzel so much rarer than all the other MO ponies?

As others have said its a combination of being sought after by collectors combined with the fact she was a later MO release (all of them are on the expensive and more hard to find side...although she is not as hard to find as other ponies from the same time) and therefore only offered a few times. Sought after-ness (new word) increases price a surprising amount some times.

I heard there was a fire in the factory when she was being made and they only did so many because the fire shut things down for a while.  Or is that a rumor spread by pony gossip?

Fire!? Has never heard that one before...but I can imagine what it looks like...

I love this!!!!!  Best photoshop ever.  I swear I DID hear about a fire in the factory shortening the production time so not as many people got her.  I don't know that the Rapunzel's themselves suffered a firey fate.  More like the production line got shut down for a while.  Or they had to stop entirely.

The fire thing is a myth for this particular pony...I am not sure if people are perhaps thinking of the supposed (and equally unconfirmed) legend about El Greco? (they did have a fire but more to cover things up than anything else )

My mom wouldn't let me get punzie because she was so expensive.

I agree though, she's sought after but not as rare as sweet scoops and scribbles and dabble (those two will be the death of me!)

Rapunzel has a reputation of a rare pony, but a lot of it is because she is so popular. I do think comes up for sale more often than many of the mail orders, for example Mommy and Baby Pony.

Wasn't rapunzel one of the most expensive mail order ponies (like back in the 80s)? Like I know somewhere I have a pamphlet with her, I feel like she was like $6.95 and goldilocks was like $2.95 or something crazy? Maybe I'm making this up, but it seems to me that most parents probably would be like get the cheap one, lol

Goldilocks was sold at a separate time.  But you're right, she was very expensive compared to the other ponies on the brochure!

I'm guessing most parents sprung for the pearlized babies, because they turn up much more than any of the others.

You're so lucky to still have that!  I was lucky enough to be able to save my allowance at the time, and I ordered Mommy and Baby and the set of pearly babies (now that entire set was expensive!)  I remember being torn over punzie or mommy and baby, so I chose mommy and baby because I could get two ponies plus accessories.  Too bad my crib got stepped on and broken I still have it but I don't think it is repairable. 

I wonder if the MO Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe had any variations than the store version?  I don't think so..

I think the pattern of Scoops's apron & hat was different, and Scoops herself might have been from either China or HK, whichever one is harder to find.  I'm less certain of the Scoops thing than I am of her apron pattern though.

I think it has to do with supply and demand, take Mimic, LOTS of people want her thus drives up her price.  I'm sure if everyone wanted saaayy.. Speedy, it would drive up her price instead.
