Tie Blanket Help
« on: March 15, 2015, 03:31:59 PM »
Hi guys! My guy, for Christmas, got this awesome fleece tie blanket. I mean, that thing is so warm, he won't allow me to steal it. :(  So, I decided to make my own.  Although, I don't want to go out and buy fabric, I actually have two vintage flat sheets that I would like to give new life to (Rainbow Brite and Care Bears). They are almost like fleece, just very thin. They're definitely thicker than a normal cotton sheet.  What tips and suggestions do y'all have for this adventure I'd like to embark on?

Thanks!

Hi there.

Well I made tie blankets out of fleece for a service project once and it's really easy.  You just lay the sheets/ fabric pieces on top of one another with their good sides (right sides) facing outward.  Then just cut a small square (3-4 inches) out of each corner. (This is so that the corners have a rounded appearance when finished.)  Then you cut the fabric about 3" in little strips on each side, cutting both layers at once.  Tie the prices together and you're done!

There's also a way you can braid the edges but I haven't learned that.  There was some one on here, in the arts and crafts Cornwall I think that had picture of fleece blankets for sale, so she could probably help.you too.  Sorry I don't remember the name.
Here's a link to one sight but it looks a bit harder, but then it's a nicer result too.

Since none of my explanation probably made sense in words here's a link with pictures using the way I learned and explained above.

I don't know exactly what kind of fabric you have but hopefully this helps a bit.

Tie blankets are super duper easy.  No sewing needed!  I made one ages ago and did it similarly to Wild Raspberry's second link.  Just put the pieces together, cut the strips, and tie knots.  It's a little time consuming and you have to keep the fabric lined up (I put safety pins all over mine to keep it straight), but it's easy as can be.  :)  Good luck!

Thanks guys. :) I think I'm just more concerned about the fabric I have. It's a thin flannel, not fleece. I couldn't think of the word. (Surprise, surprise!)  Using safety pins is a great idea!  I don't have any, but I do have a ton of straight pins. :)

Sounds fun, a Care Bear / Rainbow Brite blanket would be so cute! Good luck with the project! :)
