Is There an Easy Way to Remove Tinsel from a G3's Hair?
« on: March 15, 2015, 05:32:32 AM »
Is there an easy way to remove tinsel from a G3's hair? There are certain G3s that I love but hate their tinsel: Merriweather, Starbeam, August Breeze, etc...

That stuff is crazy fragile, and I've heard that some people have successfully sat down with something good (and long) on TV and pulled each strand of the tinsel out individually.  I've only ever removed a few crazy strands, myself, and have noticed that it tends to stretch as you're pulling, so sometimes you'll get super thin pieces of tinsel, but they blend in with the rest of the hair much better than it did from the factory.  It's pretty fine stuff, and will snap off without much effort, it's just very time consuming :)

I used forceps to get the weird thin remnant. I only did it once! It took ages.

I used tweezers and pulled each strand from as close as possible to the head. If you rip the strand and end up with a little bit of tinsel left over you can usually pull it out easily.

Got this set from Amazon.  The 8 inch ones are a bit too big, but hubby pilfered them for his R/C toys.  And you MUST have something to keep your mind busy while plucking, hence the Flix.  ;)

I used tweezers and an Xacto knife.  It took forever.  But when I just tried just pulling them out, the tinsel would stretch and break and leave behind this thin white remnant.  :/

I used good quality tweezers and a hobby knife when they stretched or snapped.
Nearly drove myself nuts, kept finding more tinsel when I thought I'd got it all!

I also used tweezers, plus a pair of tiny nail scissors to trim off the strands that broke and couldn't be salvaged from the other end. Sometimes I'd come to a pony that wasn't caked in glue on the inside and the tinsel strands would just slide right out in one long piece. Oddly satisfying! I never fully detinseled my G3s though, just reduced the tinsel load 50-80%.

I second the use of mindless background entertainment to keep boredom at bay. And if you're doing a bunch at once, be sure to take breaks every now and then to stretch and relax your hands and eyes!  :)

Okay. Thank you so much everyone! This is why I love the arena, so many helpful people.  :) I'll try it out with a pony and see how it goes.

I use nippers (cuticle nippers) for nails and carefully trim each tinsel at the base.  It's not perfect but it works for me.
