I'm confused. Is this set still easily available in stores and was there a re-release since 2011-2012?

Yes, they were found last November/December for 19.99 at Ross Stores all over USA .
Ross has sometimes old stock toys and discounted 50 % mostly from their original price.
latest items found there are  the 2012 Favorites collection from Toys R us , Ponymania set and the Talking /lighting up Queen Chrysalis and Princess Cadence , also Princess Twilight Sparkle from Walmart Through the mirror .

No not an official release but some retailers who pick up old stock have been carrying it (i.e. Ross or TK/TJ Maxx) but it has not had an actual new release.

There is however a new Boutique (not Carousel) coming out this year as part of the Cutie Mark Magic line.

Ok. I was really surprised to see this at the store. And they have a date 03/2014 stamped at the bottom of the box, if this means something.

wonder why in the world they did not release more in the USA,I mean they sold out at the stores,
is so not cool in so many levels the distribution patterns they have for the toys . -_-

they were shelf warmers in my town a few years ago when they first came out.

I got mine on clearance for < 20 for the sole purpose of getting Sweeite Swirl and
giving the rest to my daughter... ... I'm so bad!

OMG, that carousel is so cute! I don't think I ever saw that set in retail at all, though.

Her name is Sweetie Swirl. Don't think Hasbro officially named her, but since she looks like the blind bag pony of the same name, that's what the fans call her.
