Are these pony cancer spots?
« on: February 07, 2015, 10:06:45 AM »
I am considering selling a few of my childhood ponies. I was wiping this pony with a damp cloth and inspecting it when I noticed these couple brown spots. I don't really know if they are just smudges or if they are pony cancer. I have taken zoomed in pictures of them. The one with the dot is tiny - size of a straight pinhead. I don't want to try any aggressive cleaning techniques. I would like to leave that to the more experienced collectors. Let me know what you think. Thanks for your help!

Are you able to show us some pictures? There are a number of things these spots could be, and if there's more than one, age spots or mold are definite possibilities, and they are usually brownish.

If they're already in your photobucket, if you go to each image there should be a number of links available for you to post to forums. The way my bucket is set up, they appear on the right side of the window. :)

I find it easy to host in facebook...

Sometimes a dot of something gets trapped in the plastic but I'd say it's likely that if it's brown it's 'cancer'.  Pony cancer or age spots is just iodine that separates out from the plastic as it ages and appears as brown dots.  It's not really that big a deal to me but there are collectors who particularly hate it.  If you look at recent threads though there are a lot of collectors who don't care particularly newer collectors.  I sold Peppermint Crunch and Glow recently, each with a brown spot on a front leg, it reduced the price by around half.  Anyway, would be good to see pictures.

You should use the IMG option for linking the image, and you can use the modify tool on the upper right hand corner of your message to retouch your messages. ;) Let me know if you still can't get it right and I'll give you a hand. :)

On the matter of the subject those do look like age spots to me. You can't get them off so leave the harsh chemicals such as acetone in the cupboard. :) It's a shame that ponies get age spots but it's just something that needs to be accepted as a collector of old plastic toys. :/

Well, I'm trying to do all of this from my phone and it's not working out too easily. I think the consensus is hat they are age spots. So, I'm going to post the pony on eBay anyway since it is beautiful otherwise and just see what happens. Thanks for your help everyone!

I will disclose the spots, of course  :)

Yes, I'm really sorry. That looks like Mimic  :( But as I say if they are otherwise beautiful I'm sure they will find good homes because a lot of people don't really care. Just make the spots clear in the photos and don't write 'cancer' just write age spots or brown spotting, it means the same thing. You get brown spots on old paper, same with ponies.

Yes, it is mimic and she is gorgeous otherwise! Perfect hair and very clean. I hate to see her go but I need the money and I know there are collectors out there that would love to have her. I've had to keep my good ones hidden away from kids. I would love for someone to display her :)

Well done on posting the picture....I  have a fight with the forum when I try to do this with my phone and I always loose :P

As others have mentioned it does look like an age mark but Mimic is going to be popular even with that fact disclosed about her. Good luck with your sales!
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
