Back in 1997/8, Hasbro asked if I would be interested in having a look at revamping their My Little Pony toys, well, not just the toys but to redevelop the look of the ponies. At the time , Japanese animation was already influencing the style western animation, so I went off in that direction. This was flat out rejected as it was considered too much of a departure at the time, so I decided to just simply modify the look of the ponies from their current style at time. The feedback from Hasbro was that they needed to have more “edge” I then produced a series of sketches, one of which is shown above, Majesty. Hasbro were not sure but one of the marketing team asked me to look at developing some ideas for one off collectors pieces. I threw in some iconic film suggestions, such as, Edward Scissorhands (shown above). They couldn’t do these due to the cost implications of buying the rights to the characters, but the sketches were well received, so they asked me to look at similar thems that had no copyright
This is what got me in to trouble with Hasbro. For the limited edition collectors pieces they wanted something a little edgy. I was asked to take it as far as I can (“just run with it!”). My 80’s throwback, My Little Goth Pony, raise a few eyebrows but it was my little fetish pony that closed the door at Hasbro.
I did get paid though, so not a complete tragedy.

Wow, a children's toy company didn't appreciate your suggestion of a sex-based toy? Who could have seen that coming?! :yikes:

These are actually really awesome.
Much cooler than the actual G3!
I especially love the Edward Scissorhands (Big Tim Burton fan).
Majesty looks amazing too!
Everybody needs a friend!

Seriously. Even if targeted at adult collectors, what an all around shock and disaster everyone would view it as and it would tarnish the name. How stupid.

Cool read nonetheless.

*snerk*  I don't see this fetish pony,  I see a pony with roses and braided hair.... *rolls eyes*  If it truly had been a fetish pony, you could not have posted the pic to the Arena :)

Cute!  Thanks for sharing!  I looooooove the sea pony!

I'm agreeing with Squirmy here. I really don't see what's so adult about the "fetish" ponies? To me, they just look like they're goth.
(I mean, I will respect if that is the artist's intention but still. Not adult to me.)

All in all, I'm in love with these concepts! I saw them pop up a few weeks ago on Tumblr and am seriously considering making some
fanart into the G3 Firefly.

That Majesty! :dribble: I so wish we got a G3 crystal princess Madge now! Firefly is very cool too, a unique take on the character for sure. "Introduce hooves instead of plain legs" - I like this guy's thinking, if only it had caught on.

Which one is fetish pony, the crucifix? Or black rose? I guess leather collars and boots can be indicative of domination, and rose's tail is supposed to put in mind whips? The lipstick/eye shadow and piercings just scream G1 pony makeup and Sweetheart Sisters to me. :P Overall they both look generic goth, like something out of an Evanescence video clip... Not directly inappropriate but I can see how Hasbro marketing to 3-5 year olds wouldn't approve of such themes.

I think the G4 socks ponies look more "fetish-y" than the "fetish" pony, ha ha!  (Love the braids in her tail, totally going to try this with my own ponies.)

Thanks for posting this!  I've seen some of these pictures before, but not Majesty.  LOVE HER!

So he submitted these around 1997 . . . that would be just around the time G2 started.  Hasbro must have gone in that direction instead, but kept the artist's designs on file and dug them up for G3.  (Hasbro would have owned the rights to the designs he made for them, I'm sure, whether they chose to use them or not.)

I guessed it was the one with the cross with the leather and spike collar and piercings.

Yeah, that was my guess too! I mean, I've seen more mature pony designs by far - and like LadyMoondancer said, the "stocking" ponies look more mature than this one, in some ways! - but I can imagine the artist only got so far as "And here's my concept for a fetish po-" before the Hasbro executives cut in with "LEMME STOP YOU RIGHT THERE." XD But it's hard to do vinyl, zippers and whips without it looking a little ... mature. If he had labeled it as 'gothic fashionista pony', maybe he would have gotten away with it!

I think he talked himself out the room with Hasbro.  The word "fetish" was probably all they needed to hear to show him the door.  You need remember your audience when making a pitch and toy company will usually not be receptive to that kind of terminology.

Though it is funny how Hasbro told him they did not want to depart from the style when we would end up getting G2.
