Box-hair Nightmare
« on: January 09, 2015, 11:38:38 PM »
>> Okay so I'm exaggerating just a bit, but, being a super lazy collector I often just open my G4 ponies and shove them on a shelf. I really don't make time to do something fun with all my brushables such as styling their hair up. Recently most of my pony collection has been boxed up and today I pulled the G4s out and looked (most of) them over and just.... YIKES!

You can hardly tell who is who in that fluffy sea of manes and tails. I think I need to actually do something about this. ^^; I was planning on just wetting, combing it down, and letting them air dry. But if any of you have some secrets for getting that super smooth, perfect hair I often see in your photos feel free to share away!

I know what you mean. Sometimes I get super lazy or busy that I just display newly-acquired ponies on the shelf without giving them a spa; but i'll always get it done eventually.  :) For hair, usually I wet it and  comb it through with shampoo and conditioner (if its really bad). Rinse, wrap hair with tissue and leave it out to dry. Simple, fuss free and gets the job done!

A friend of mine recently washed 40 G3s with cloth softener and it worked greatly on their manes and tails, it is all silk, soft and smelling good. She had it mixed to the water and was able to do a lot of ponies at once on a bucket, it may work if your ponies are clean and you just need to make the hair better quickly.

I'm going to try it on my ponies anytime soon, but I haven't done it yet.

Comb through a little baby oil - just a small amount. It tames the hair, adds a gloss and weights it a little better to hold it in position :)

Have fun taming all those ponies!!!

Worry about baby oil attracting dust more than just regular hair conditioner... but maybe it's okay?

I'm worried about all that baby oil making everything greasy. They're all going to be sharing the same shelf area with like 20+ ponies and Fashion styles, even teeny tiny amounts of baby oil per pony adds up being a lot.

So Thus far we've got water/brush/air dry, Shampoo/conditioner, and diluted fabric softener.

I think I'm going to test all three methods to see which I like best. Each one shall get a different treatment. Say hello to our lovely test subjects.

Nope - no difference at all - in fact if anything the hair tends to be much easier to brush or wipe when you go back to it.

LOL - yes if you use too much thats possible but you really use such a small amount that you dont even notice it in the hair its just that it coats the nylon enough to make it more pliable and weighted.

I am sure you will have fun trying out the methods you do decide to give a shot to! :)

Yeah, so much for "facrtory curl" huh?
It's pretty sad the way that hair comes out of G4 packaging :X

Since I finally had free time today I have all three of the Lyra Heartstrings drying currently. I'm glad I never threw out all of the accessories that came with my G4s. It helps to have copious amounts of pony hair clips.

Next I think I'll try soaking the mane/tails in pure fabric softener to see if the dilution really makes all that big of a difference. And I'll also try out the baby oil and see if I like the results. Although the baby oil may have to wait as I might need to actually run out and buy some. >>; Also, is the baby oil trick supposed to be added while the hair is damp or dry?

Being utterly forgetful and super busy I realized I forgot to post the results. For that I apologize!

All of 'em had some basic pony clips and were allowed to air dry with the clips in. and I didn't try to do any fancy styling.

First is just wetting the hair. Super fuzzy, hardly does squat if the hair is super frizzy already.

2nd is the diluted fabric softener. It came out pretty shiny and it is a little softer. Smells nice, too.

Last is giving it a good wash with soap and conditioner. Personally I think this has the best results. It's not completely straight but it's much  more tame than before. I also think the conditioner makes it silkier and softer than even the fabric softener.

Even just washing it in something whether it's fabric softener or even just shampoo or dish detergent really makes it a lot easier to deal with when trying to style it while wet, too. But maybe that's just me. >>;
