Dragon Ball Fan Thread

I don't know if this has been done before. But heck, MLP was one of the many things in my childhood, and it shares place my heart along things like Disney, and of course, Dragon Ball.

I think this kind of thread is allowed, I haven't seen any rule that goes against this, so here it is. In this thread anything can be talked about, the merchandise, DBZ, DBGT, the videogames, the upcoming movies, etc.

First, a few questions:

1.Who's your favourite main character?

My response, Piccolo. First, he was an evil baddie, but then he turned good and still was a great warrior.

2.Who's your favourite villain?

From the original story, Cell and Buu. Never liked Frieza that much. From DBGT, Baby and the Shadow Dragons, and from the movies, Janemba, Garlic Jr and Dr.Willow.

3.What's your favourite Saga?

Android Saga. It was the darkest, and the one I was introduced as a kid first.

4.What scene was the one that made you cry the most?

Piccolo's death in DBGT. The other death scenes were great, because they showed that the warriors were strong enough to never fear death. But the one in DBGT was heart-breaking, because Piccolo was accepting his own doom.

5.What's your favourite DB movie?

The one that presented Bardock, the one where Goku and Vegeta fuse into Gogeta and Battle of Gods.

6.What's your favourite fight scene?

I don't think there was ever a bad fight scene on DB, DBZ and DBGT.

7.If you had Shenron in front of you, what would be your wish?

MOAR WISHES!

x3 I LOVE the Dragonball universe as well! I also grew up watching it and playing the games. Everything about it is absolutely awesome!

And answering your questions

1.Who's your favourite main character?

Definitely Goku. I love all the main characters but I'd be lying if I said Goku wasn't a loveable dork.

2.Who's your favourite villain?

>> You're not gonna like my answer but.... Frieza. I know he's not the strongest villain or anything but it's more a combination of his design and his personality, really. Not much to say about his design, I just adore it. (His race is a pretty interesting enigma, too.) Before most of the villains became just something else to fight Frieza was that first big galactic threat that made everyone wet themselves and he KNEW it. All of the DBZ villains are cocky and trash talk (what villain doesn't?) But his smugness is a bit charming, maybe it's the spoiled regal attitude behind it?

Movie-wise Cooler is a given. >> But I really like Bojack.

3.What's your favourite Saga?

Namek Saga and the Majin Buu stuff is my favorite.

4.What scene was the one that made you cry the most?

I'm gonna sound heartless, but, nothing in DBZ has really made me cry. Not even the deaths of my favorite characters. >>; Dragonball is a fighting anime, I expect deaths and they're not too emotionally gripping for me. Maybe it's because I know most of them can be wished back to life or will be just fine in the aferlife. Even the baddies don't seem to have that awful of a time in "HFIL".

5.What's your favourite DB movie?

Cooler's Revenge, Bojack Unbound, Legendary Super Saiyan Broly, and Battle of the Gods.

6.What's your favourite fight scene?

There are many but I personally love in GT Where Cell and Frieza attempt to work together to fight Goku when he get's stuck down in the Home For Infinite Loosers. (I know what's is called in the uncut but I'm going refrain from using it)

And pretty much any fight with Gotenks, those are always amusing.

7.If you had Shenron in front of you, what would be your wish?
>> I'd probably have to go with a "success" wish.

I'd want to wish to become a vet and to possess all the knowledge and skill necessary. >>; skip the schooling or whatever. XD

I'll go through and answer the questions eventually, but Dragonball is definitely a series that I've been wanting to give another watch since it's been a while.  I love it, though!  Right now, anytime I think Dragonball, I think of DBZ abridged. I need to rewatch the actual series because, seriously, DBZ abridged is clouding my memory of the actual show.

It's okay, I probably don't like Frieza because Toriyama made it out of all his fears. Which is awesome, don't get me wrong, but I feel like what he fears is not what most people do fear.

I know that he fears homosexual people (Every time homosexuality is referenced on DB is always from a villain or a guy who's just plain creepy xD), but in Frieza, the lipstick was ridiculous. I also didn't like how much OP he was at the very beginning. The other villains were strong because by their own traps they had became stronger than the Z-Fighters.

Frieza was just made up as a strong dude, and they overhyped him way too much. He also had a very generic motivation (galactic conquest, really?) and he offered nothing new from many other tyrannical villains in fictional history (Darth Vader comes to mind). And in the end, he causes his own destruction and dies in the most pathetic way possible.

Every other villain died in glory, but Frieza either would have died in a pretty dull way on Namek or permanently destroyed by Trunks on his return to Earth. He literally dies 10 minutes after arriving to Earh...

I do blame Funimation studios for their dubbing with Frieza. It's laughable, and you cannot take seriously.

I do remember this baddie leaving some impact on me, but the fact that I started on the Cell Saga, probably changed my mind towards Frieza, since Cell is kind of the opposite character.

I still respect this character. Even after he died he was mentioned many times later on the other two sagas on DBZ or in DBGT a couple of times. And they're resurrecting him for the next movie, ain't that awesome?

Overall, the character is great and memorable, but personally, he's the Krillin of all the villains.

I felt wrong voting "Yes" as being a DragonBall fan, because I love it far more than anything else I've ever been a fan of.  I still watch something DB/Z related a couple times a week and binge watch every couple of months.  It will never get old to me.  My answers!

1.Who's your favourite main character?
I would marry Piccolo if I could.  No joke.  I am so in love with him that even my husband casually refers to him as my boyfriend.  For real.

2.Who's your favourite villain?
Hmm... I think I'd have to go with Cell.  He's really the only baddie that has given me down-right shivers.

3.What's your favourite Saga?
I don't think that I have one, really.  They all have aspects that I really enjoy and with the exception of the Buu saga, I really don't think the story would have been the same without any of them.  Not trying to bash that saga, but it did get pretty ridiculous, even for this series.

4.What scene was the one that made you cry the most?
I'm not sure which one has made me cry the hardest, but I know that the last really good cry I had while watching DBZ was when I was rewatching the entire series from the beginning and we hit the part in DBZ where the end credits change to We Were Angels.  Something about Gohan growing up, standing on his own and having the torch passed to him really moves me.

5.What's your favourite DB movie?
This may sound lame, but I really, REALLY like Tapion (not sure why) so I guess Wrath of the Dragon has to be my favorite?  I know it's not the greatest story there is, but I love that character.

6.What's your favourite fight scene?
Piccolo versus Number 17.  No debate.

7.If you had Shenron in front of you, what would be your wish?
Not sure at this point in time...

Overall, the character is great and memorable, but personally, he's the Krillin of all the villains.

Frieza was designed to be based upon what he thought monsters looked like when he was a child. Not every single aspect about Frieza is supposed to represent some specific fear he has as an adult. How in the world do you figure that because Frieza has dark lips (we're not even sure if he wears lipstick) that he 100% he represents the fact that Akira Toriyama is positively homophobic? Any links to any reliable sources? Interviews? Maybe he thinks flamboyant villains are just funny? Most of his work is comedic in nature, and it's evident that Toriyama loves to add a good laugh. Even a "serious" fight scene in dragonball is occasionally splashed with a bit of humor. Just... what? Don't you think it would be some sort of big explosive news within the anime fandom if we found out that this super famous and respected manga artist admitted he was afraid or repulsed by homosexuality?

Also, EVERY main dragonball Z villain is ridiculously overpowered when they are first introduced.  They need to be if our fighters are going to have to strive to become stronger to beat them. How anit-climatcic would it be if a villain who is supposed to cause problems for our Z-fighters for a season or more couldn't even hold his own against the main characters in the first fight he was introduced? It'd be more like a 'Scheme of the Week' type villain "Decepticons retreat! I'll get you next time Gadget!"

Cell started as a weakling. The only reason he had any strength to begin with is because of how he was made, our of many strong people, with also some energy from people he had previously absorbed.
And Buu too. At the beginning he was a joke. A fat baby pink happy monster, but then turns into a bloodlusted chaotic machine. More than a challenge, sure, but he was originally not too strong to begin with.

Imperfect Cell slipped my mind but Buu was a super-powered killer from the get-go. Child-like does not a weakling make in the Dragbonall universe. Buu is an ancient evil creature that's been around for like... ever. x-x He takes on the forms or sheds them depending who or what he absorbs or regurgitates. He was "Kid" while Bibidi had him and before he absorbed one of the higher Kais. That Kai had a similar personality which lead to Buu having more of a whimsical personality. He was taking down literal gods before he gave Earth a visit. I'd say that's a pretty serious threat, regardless of whether or not he looks like a fat baby. x-x Some of the most unassuming of creatures can often have the worst bites or stings.

I'm much more of a fan of DBZ Abridged than the actual show itself. I love Abridged, it's so hilarious (and so much faster to get through things).

I had actually never watched any of the DB series until about a year ago. My husband grew up watching DB and loves it alot, so he encouraged me to watch through Dragonball and then DBZ Kai with him. I don't care much for the 50+ episodes of one fight, just not my thing. I enjoy the episodes between the big sagas more, but that's just me.

I love Vegeta, though! Definitely my fav character. I'm a sucker for the bad-asses. Oh, and I may or may not be in love with Future Trunks. ;)

Ooh, I love Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z! I've never understood why, as usually action just bores me, but something about DBZ's action is actually amusing to me?

1.Who's your favourite main character?

I never actually thought on this one... Lol. I suppose Goku? Goten is adorable, though! Although I can't forget to mention Vegeta and his character development.

2.Who's your favourite villain?

Freeza was my favorite villain. He was just so ...bad. And the emotional lead-up to Goku turning Super Saiyan against him was amazing.

3.What's your favourite Saga?

Namek for the reason I mentioned above. But also because the whole of the 'Dragon Ball Z' portion up to that was leading to Freeza's defeat. The rest of the series sometimes felt out of the left field to me.

4.What scene was the one that made you cry the most?

I'm not sure I ever cried in DBZ, and that's weird because I cry at everything. xD

5.What's your favourite DB movie?

I actually haven't seen many of them...

6.What's your favourite fight scene?

I could mention Freeza again, but I think this time I'll mention the fusions. I thought they were really cool when I was young. Lol.

7.If you had Shenron in front of you, what would be your wish?

Honestly? For all of my medical issues to go away so I can go back to living.
