Also for some modern power ballads, Sonata Arctica do a very good job indeed; Shamandalie and Tallulah in particular are top notch!

I like how you think. Power metal in general has done a fine job of keeping the tradition of cheesy power ballads alive and well (and it's awesome!).

Most of the classic power ballads I can think of have been named already so I toss a modern one in: "Wander" by Kamelot.
