Question for plush makers, but all input welcome
« on: November 24, 2014, 02:55:26 PM »
So, I have a question about eyes.  Let's say you're making a plush G4 Cupcake/Sugarcup, right?  And you're going along happily picking out embroidery thread and all when you realize the box art vector's eyes aren't the same style as the actual toy.  Which do you choose to embroider? Assuming of course that you have the embroidery file for whichever eye you do choose.  Do you think people would be more likely to buy a plush that looks like the toy or the art?

Hardly any of the toys have the correct eye style, anyway.  Twilight's eyes are always the wrong shape, Rarity's are missing her bottom lashes, the less said about Dash's eyes the better, etc.

Box vector/show accurate is what I would pick :)

I would pick whichever looks more pleasing to my eye. :P For example, I find Rarity's bottom lashes a bit silly looking sometimes since the lower lid isn't lined in black. But you don't have to listen to me as I was never one to look for "show accurate" styles anyway. :silly: I like fan art with a personal touch and I don't mind if official toys aren't completely show accurate as long as they are recognisable and convey the character's personality (I admit they sometimes don't, here the eyes are really important actually...)

Considering potential buyers, I believe box art / show accurate style will be preferred by most people.

That's a great reply Griffin :bigups:

I think to a degree it does depend on what the plush looks like :) ideas often change as I'm working and that's often reflected in the eyes.

My question is mostly about ponies who never appear in the show (Honeybuzz, Dewdrop Dazzle, etc.) but I was really leaning toward the vector style myself so it's good to know I'm not the only one who prefers that.  :D

I thibk you should go with whichever is prettier. I find that the box art often looks better than the toy, but not always, I guess. It's up to you, really. I'd just go with whichever is the prettiest. If I were making a plush, I'd totally change Fluttershy's eye shape. It's always been strange to me, even though I love her. lol. But I think most people probably like their toys more accurate.

I would say whichever is more "common" that is, what do you see that pony normally with out of all the times it appears?
