Are G1 Playsets worth anything?
« on: October 26, 2014, 07:33:58 PM »
I have duplicates - triplicates even - of just about every G1 playset. I will be choosing the nicest one to keep, and getting rid of the extras. Question is, though, is it even worth selling them? They are all SHELLS ONLY, no accessories, and most are FADED AND WORN. They are big and bulky, so shipping is expensive. Is it even worth trying to rehome Dream Castle when shipping is $45?

There are plenty of collectors out there wanting to add shells to their collections. Me being one. But I am with you on the shipping. It's ridiculous. Maybe place some craigslist ads? Or newspaper ads? Something for local buyers? You can always go to your local pawn/thrift shops and sell them off there. There are plenty of options. The only thing I ask is do NOT toss them! At least donate them. They can be restored and given a second life with the correct collector.

I'd potentially be interested in a Waterfall if you have extra(s) - about the only G1 playset I haven't managed to add to my collection yet.  At worst though, please do donate them - someone somewhere will find a place and maybe many happy hours of play even for accessory-less playsets.

You can try to give them away on the arena (have the seller just pay shipping or something) or try to sell them on Craigslist.  Or give them to the thrift store.  :)

I'm glad you asked this question, Thunderwing1   I've been wondering the same thing (in my case my mother saved my sister's old playset & pony collection and since my sister isn't interested in old toys I've been assigned with sorting through it all).  I'll be reading along with interest!

Fairs and meets are the best places to sell playsets.   If you can't go to the Fair, maybe you could give/sell them to someone in your area/country that is going to the Fair.

It'd be nice to keep them in the collector community, but ya, I would say donate them if you don't have any other options.   Shipping just doesn't make it possible to sell large playsets that aren't worth much to begin with.

I'd definitely be interested, depending on the playset. And we're in the same province so we may be able to arrange an alternate to shipping.

I agree that there must be another way to get rid of them than tossing them!

I would try offering them up for sale here, or at a meet.  If you don't get any interest, try local listings.  They may not sell for much, but they will be saved from the garbage.  I donated an extra dream castle I couldn't sell because of shipping cost, and the thrift store threw it in the garbage in front of me (into a dumpster, and it broke into pieces) =(  I wish I had offered it up on kijiji.

I'm looking for the waterfall as well, btw.

I hope they're worth something! I'm going to try to sell a near complete stable and castle at the national fair next summer!

Most shells hold some kind of value. Sure some are harder to move on than others but all of them will find happy new owners I am sure :)

I'd be interested in a Waterfall too if you have an extra. I am NOT picky about condition as long as it's basically structurally intact. But yeah, because of shipping most playsets are pretty hard to find new homes for. My Dream Castle and Lullabye Nursery were acquired locally. (My Pretty Parlor and Show Stable were bought online though, though the Pretty Parlor is smaller so that's not saying much)
