alternate ways of, curing polymer clay?
« on: October 24, 2014, 01:44:30 PM »
My stove is broken.  So am wondering if there is other ways to cure polymer clay (fimo, sculpty iii). I have a stove top, a deep fryer,  and a old wood burning stove.
any ideas?

Do you have a microwave? Believe it or not you can cure Fimo in a microwave although you will need a microwave safe tupperware filled with water, a very well ventilated location and you should always run some tests first. Its not safe for all mediums unfortunately.

You could pick up a toaster oven. They are simply miniature ovens! Great size and EFFICIENT (read: more environmentally friendly) for small projects or small meals.

They're common on craigslist for cheap... ones in the Seattle area right now are between $5 and $20.

A toaster oven sounds like a good idea. I have tried boil curing but the results were not too good, bits and pieces came off during the process and the clay never cured properly either... It may work if you have simple chunks of clay with no extra bits added on top.

I hope you can figure out something! :)

I'm not sure I'd try the deep fryer lol. :haha: The toaster oven would probably be a good option!

Oh I use the toaster oven all the time!  Just make sure to cook your stuff on LOOOOOW heat - since otherwise they tend to fry on the top...

If you don't have anything made yet, you might consider experimenting with Apoxie Sculpt, which air-dries over a period of about a day and doesn't need to be cooked.  (It is sticky but you can lotion up your hands and that helps- also water helps)
