I CAN'T paint for sour apples 

But I was over at my folks yesterday and my girls were doing some painting with watercolours so I started playing around with them.  As ever it was done on some scrap paper and I ran out of room (hence the photo cutting off the edges of the paper), but I wanted to share my little attempt with a paintbrush as I was quite excited about how it turned out, lol, esp since I didn't do a line drawing first!    I might try some more sometime

Ooh I love that style, Xu Beihong meets Marlin! I especially like the brushwork on the mane and how you've painted the abdomen/loin area, it really gives an impression of a shiny coat and the muscle & bone shapes beneath the skin.

It's amazing!  You know I love your ponies.  You have a fantastic grasp of equine anatomy and your ponies are always so elegant.  You should paint more often.

Well I have a little secret -- I didn't know his name either until now. But I thought I'd dig up the name instead of referring to "those ink paintings of horses" or something, lol. I've frequently come across with these paintings, featured on postcards etc. but I never looked up the name of the artist before; I wasn't even sure if he was Chinese or Japanese.

Lol   He's an interesting guy in an interesting time (I read up a little about him on wikipedia - ah wiki - my friend in all sorts of times of educational need!)
