You know, I was really doubtful about mod podge, but I have used it on a couple of customs now and it's actually not bad at all. Though most pros on here say Testors Dullcote is the best.
For the FBR, I think the standard method is painting on many thin layers of paint, but I tried that once and got awful brush strokes.
I have had some pretty good success with make-up sponged gradients and I'm pretty sure you could get a nice finish on a FBR that way. If your bait is darker than the colour you want, I'd prime it with a white coat first.
As an example, this girl's gradients were painted with a make-up sponge and sealed in modge podge.
