Halloween Costume Questions
« on: September 25, 2014, 01:15:10 PM »
I want to dress as Star Swirled the Bearded for Halloween. I don't know how to sew, but I need a hat and cape. Any tips?

First thing...you say you cant sew...but what happened the last time you tried? A cape is one of the most straight forward things to make once you have the fabric; its not a fancy make and you dont even need out & out sewing skills; you just need the materials, the directions and determination!

The hat is another story but I would think your best bet it is to buy a basic hat (such as a cheap black witch hat) and then decorate it with fabric or other to create the effect you need.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

My sewing usually comes out messy. Though my plush bunny project I sewed in 8th grade is still together with very little holes. I might give it a shot. Thank you so much~!

A cape requires very little sewing.  Depending on the fabric, you might be able to get away with no sewing at all.  Get something that won't unravel and then just paint the designs on if you're afraid to get the needle and thread going.  But a cape really would only need a few hems, which is really quite easy.  :)

You can find no sew cape/cloak patterns online - look under SCA or medieval patterns and you can buy hem webbing that just requires an iron and a steady hand. As for the hat, Cat's idea is the best, use something already made as a base and go from there.

I don't know much about sewing but I agree with the advice given above. :) The moon and stars design can be painted on, or if you prefer fabric / a more 3D look you could try felt, cutting out the shapes and glueing them on.

Good luck, whichever method(s) you choose. I'd love to see the results!
