Tell me about iPods, please.
« on: August 23, 2014, 10:17:51 AM »
Hi, everyone! :)

I have no experience with iPhones or iPods, although we do have an iPad - Gen 2. (Mr. Stomper received it as part of going back to school so he could be a payroll admin. But that's neither here nor there.)

That said, I really like some of the cool apps on the iPad. Which versions of iPod allow you to use many of the same apps?

I've seen the older versions and it looks nothing more than a very expensive MP3 player with a little LCD screen. (Or is that LED? I can't keep it straight.) But it seems some of the later versions let you use apps like you'd find for an iPad. I just don't know which ones those would be.

I guess I'm just asking which iPod versions (and generations) would allow me to use an alarm clock function that would turn on with music of my choice.  The iPad is large and bulky, and a smaller gadget would be welcome. Don't really want an iPhone at this time.

Also, can you put WMA files on an iPod?

Is it worth it looking for a used one on Kijiji? How much would you be willing to pay for a used one?

Thanks for any help you can offer. *gives flowers and grain-free cookies* :flow: :cookie:

The newest iPod is what you want, if you want lots of apps. :) That'd  be the iPod Touch 5th generation

You can get ipods cheap. You want one that runs an ios. It could be 7.. it could be 6. Apps will require the iOs.  Stay away from the Nano if you want apps.

You can compare the models here: http://www.apple.com/ipod/compare-ipod-models/

HOWEVER, from what I'm reading, it looks like even older editions have alarm settings..

Yeah, you're gonna want an iPod touch. They're like miniature iPads. The latest ones are nice and easy to use, and I've got one in my pocket right now that I use as my book, my social contact, my camera, and my main writing tool.

I've never bought a used one, but I've sold my old ones to people usually for around a hundred bucks. I still feel guilty grandma wouldn't take it for free.

(Also you had it right with LED screen)

If youre looking for used...just note that some of the older models cannot update to a higher iOS, thus making some apps unusable. I.e. - most new apps need the most current (or one behind) iOS.

True, that. I'll definitely keep that in mind as I go looking.

I love my Ipod touch 5th generation, I take it with me outside when I am doing stuff in the yard and I have lots of apps. I see them used on facebook yard sale pages for cheap sometimes, also check out gamestop, they sell used ones too from time to time!

I don't think you can put WMA's on an iPod of any kind.  The files have to be MP3 and possibly MP4.  You also have to load them onto the iPod with iTunes.  Nothing else will work.

Okay, thanks. :) Fortunately, my ratio of WMAs has decreased over the years and perhaps I can find ways to convert them to MP3s files.

I've converted several WMA files (all music/audio files) in to iTunes. It's really easy. :) I can give you detailed instructions if you like.

Watch out you don't get the most recent iPod Nano. They look like you can download apps for them, but you actually can't because they run on a completely different OS altogether, much smaller. >_<

I love my older ipod classic dearly but am intrigued by the ipod touch mainly because of its interface and seemingly endlless features. However the only thing that's keeping me from buying one is the much smaller hard drive capacity they come with, I believe the largest is 64 gb. So keep that in mind if you happen to have a huge music collection!

And it you're having problems with itunes or just plain get bugged by it like me :P, there are plenty of other programs you can use to put music on your ipod.

I've got get latest edition, 8gb. It's plenty of space for everything. Highly recommend it. Camera quality is rubbish as to the expected, but the apps run perfectly, and the sound quality is great. As everyone else has said it's basically a mini ipad. Requires small fingers for typing though!
