Oh wow, lots of references here. I'm sure there's some pins/marbles/straws floating around my house somewhere, so all I'd need are bands.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Just a note, if you are going to put coloured bands in their hair - i.e. Applejack - just make sure to replace them on occasion. Coloured rubber bands dry out and break down quite quickly and it often results in the colour staining hair :) Worth keeping an eye on.

Yeah I noticed that with a standard brown rubber band. It just crumbled when I moved one of my brushables.

The little ones that come with the ponies last pretty well.

Well here's my attempt at styling Rarity. Messed up a bit when I took one of the rubber bands off, but not bad for a first attempt. Applejack's next when I have the time.

Very nice! I found you can poke the stray ends around a bit to get her tight curl (or trim them), but also like how she looks with the extra body they provide.

Quick question for when I eventually get around to working on my AJ toys:

Any other tips to flatten out the manes/tails? I worked at one of my AJ's manes for a while, with a toothbrush and water, and still looks curly.

One of em includes a Rainbow Power AJ, where half the mane is 6 inches of crinkly foil hair. Gonna be fun working with that, but I'll manage.

I recommend wetting the hair and using a warm flat iron- still cool enough to touch but hot enough to do stuff. If it doesn't react, add conditioner and go a little hotter. Too much heat can frizz and melt the hair, so be really careful. I also find that metallic tinsel can be flat ironed and actually responds pretty well; however, I have not attempted to use heat on iridescent tinsel.
Here's my ACNH creator code. I thought I might share it, since I have quite a few pony designs.

As mentioned a flat iron is the best bet for getting pony hair super straight - just be careful when you use one as it can melt the hair. Plenty of conditioner lathered in the hair, keeping the hair wet and working in very small sections is key.

Boiling water on regular manes flattens them well for me. I'm not sure what they do to foil hair however. Pouring boiling water and then pouring ice water on manes is an important process for setting in the style when your finished. It takes out almost all bounce to the hair, so you would only want to do this to styles you perfected with straws if you wanted the pony's hair to not lay flat.

Oooooh, tinsel... Be very careful, boiling water makes tinsel go BANANAS. It shrinks and crinkles up in heat, I know that some people very, very carefully have ironed out old tinsel on ponies... Me, I just de-tinsel all my ponies, since it doesn't feel nice and gets terribly unruly when you brush their manes. That's why I'll never buy those ponies with whole huge stripes of tinsel...

On a slightly different note, I just got a beanie baby AJ. Her mane seems intent on sticking straight out and I can't get it curled around her neck (at least without assistance from a rubber band). I've been combing it gently and securing it around AJs neck with said band. Just looks a little awkward though, like a cheap collar. Anyone have any hints to work with this?
I'm hesitant about using water, a wet plushie probably isn't a good idea.

And I'm cheating a bit and using red breadbag ties in place of tiny bands for AJ's hairbands. Much easier to work with.

That's what I did so far. Gonna look around for a thin piece of cardboard and try to carve out a hat for her later.

Diluted fabric conditioner works well, especially if the hair is left to soak in it for a few hours. A friend of mine salvaged a tangled and ratty cosplay wig this way ^^
As in liquid fabric softener? :o

I know that many people here don't like leaving product in pony hair, but I've had Herbal Essences Anti Frizz Crème in a few g4s' hair for a while now without any ill effects. When you first put it in, it makes the hair one stiff mass, but it separates into pretty, smooth strands with a little brushing.
