Is it possible to dye a pony to restore her colour?
« on: July 04, 2014, 09:06:19 AM »
I've wondered about this, when you see faded ponies that are otherwise pristine, is it a done thing to re-dye them to get back their original "skin" colour? How is this done and is there a specific type of colouring used? I would love to know. I'm not hugely "in" to restoration but I would like to know more ^_^

I've seen people use what I believe was RIT fabric dye to change body color.  I've heard it can be really hard to get the color correct though, but it's been done!

This is one of those questions which does fit in the Corral because its technically restoring a pony. But I honestly think you are going to get the best advice over in Customs because so many talented members over there work with this kind of thing. I am going to bump this thread over to Customs for the moment [you may find it bump returned if the topic changes a little :P].

Dying is not reaaaaly restoring as you cant "restore" the colour in the plastic but simply colour the pony to a different shade than it is currently [close to original].

Check out seashell:

Oh, I forgot she was added to the MLP Preservation site!

I sunfaded her first to try to even her out and fade the marker.  Then used RIT dye to dye her. She came out a bit darker than I was aiming for, but still, she looks way better!

Here's each step:

Oh my gosh that is amazing!! How did you stop the dye from colouring her eyes and symbols, did you paint over them first? :) I have an Italian CC that is very faded but otherwise pristine, I would love to try and get her colour back to pink :)

Yup, I painted over the eyes and symbols with white acrylic paint before I sunfaded her and left it on while I dyed her. I've read you don't need it for dying as the dye won't take to the factory paint, but I didn't want to take any chances.  :)
