Geochaching, has anyone tried it?
« on: June 24, 2014, 04:17:41 PM »
A friend and I did geocaching once a couple years ago. Just a real beginners cache, back in the day before I had a smart phone with GPS. It was kinda fun tho we felt a little silly when we finally spotted it since we'd been walking around it for about 40 mins. I haven't' really tried doing  it again even though there are suppose to be caches pretty close to where I live.

I took a blue marble from the beginners cache and replaced it with a whistle.

If anyone else has tried geocaching what level did you do and what did you find / exchange?

Hahaha, my friends and I do this allll the time under the name "TwoQueersLookForStuff"... only because "TwoLesbiansLookForStuff" was too long.
Found all kinds of stuff, including a post card and some painted rocks. I always left little mini la la loopsies.

i love geocaching. I have met some amazing people while looking for the caches and it is a great way to see new places. I have been living on the gulf coast for 4 years now and geocaching has shown me places that I never even knew was down here.

we like to take the travel bugs when we go out of the country on vacation and  try to bring one back.

There's one in the park nearby, we went looking but couldn't find it. Then I read more details on it and others from the same person...apparently the container is pretty small. Maybe this summer we'll go look again.

I would go with my sister and her husband before he passed. Haven't really done it since.

It seemed silly before I started doing it, but Geocaching is great!  (Although, sometimes when people ask me what I did over the weekend and I say 'geocaching', they give me that blank stare and I have to explain that it's sort of like treasure hunting... It just has to be something you're in to!)

Anyway, my husband and I love it.  We pretty much only do it on hiking trips, because we like the challenge of finding things under a pile of rocks or in a cave.  It's an amazing way to explore places you've never been before.  The difficulty level can range from a short drive from your house to very difficult (as in, you need special equipment to get it - rock climbing!).

We plan out what we're going to look for before we go.  We've walked away before without finding anything, but that just makes it fun for next time... we've brought friends and they really enjoy it once they get in to it.

For us, it's a great excuse to get some fresh air and exercise.  A hike is already fun.. but when you add that twist of treasure hunting to it... WAY better!

You'd be surprised.  I would wager there are multiple caches near you.  I've gone a few times with a friend and there were dozens of them just within a small radius.  People like to hide them in every landmark, every green space, and every major public area they can.  This is also a global phenomenon .

It looks interesting, but the only ones near me seem to hide them in places that would require a car. And I'm a poor bus user :(

Having said that, are there any recommendations for a free iPhone app that could help with this? I haven't gone looking for an app properly yet, but I wouldn't mind taking it up in the future :)

Yes!  Search the App store for "Geocaching".  The one I have is a green icon with a white box in the center.  It's great!

My friend bought a special gadget just for geocaching! I thought it was interesting, and I admit it's something that does seem like it would be fun to make a pastime out of.
