trying my hand at sculpting "pony" and toothless-finished pics added

anyone have good recommendations of moldable clay that dries well? sculpty is a little too stiff for my taste, but the cold clay is too soft. anything inbetween?



I recently bought a beautiful mulan pony sculpture from Jocelyn. (Love her!!will share pictures soon!)

and well before she arrived, the sculpted bug bit me.
since i have a bunch of cold clay laying around i thought i'd try to make something.

i tried using a tinfoil base to get a nice solid piece to work from, but when it dried it cracked terribly. so i haven't finished it, but i'm really proud of my form. the last sculpture i attempted.... my mom asked me. oh that's great jb.... what is it? square body, all uneven legs, and more of a peg than a head XD it was horrible.

i do want to try again. i worked from a sketch rather than an image in my head and that worked much better.
someday i'll make and anthos, alder and meron sculpture set.
moving on. last night i saw the httyd2 movie. and well. i had made a plush i took with me, and i thought staring at my pony sculpture... wonder if i can make toothless.
so i tried.

his proportions are not show accurate. but more of chibi inspired by a drawing. i made holes in his back to place pegged wings later. but the clay was too soft to attempt it now. he is solid clay. no base. i really like him, and hope he doesn't brake when i sand and paint him.

You're off to a good start! The pony already looks like a pony and I'm sure it'll look great when finished. But wow, that Toothless looks so cute! ^.^ I love the chibi proportions you chose for him. Really looking forward to seeing the final results!

thank you everyone!! i finished him last night, but his wing broke this morning... i had planned on selling him, but he's pretty fragile, so i'm not sure he'd make the trip.
i'll have pictures posted of him tonight.

What a cutie! ^.^ I love the eyes, they're very expressive. The eyes were my favourite feature actually when I first saw HTTYD, I adored all the cat-like faces Toothless was making! You did a great job.
