Hydrogen peroxide questions
« on: May 20, 2014, 09:13:47 AM »
So! I've got a few ponies I'm hoping to give a hydrogen peroxide/sunlight treatment soon and I've got a few questions for those who have done this before. I've been trying to whiten Glory and Moondancer but the lack of exposure where I live and the mild Wisconsin sun is making me want something a little more effective.

General question: If the stain is low on the pony's body, is it okay to just use a little and have her "wade" in it? For example, my Lemon Treats has stains on her hooves, maybe from wearing shoes too long. But she has gorgeous curls and I'm unsure about having her completely submerged. Should I worry about the peroxide slightly changing her overall body color where she's submerged, and coming out uneven if she's not in all the way?

Is it okay to "reuse" the same bath, rotating ponies in and out as their treatment finishes?

Here are the other ponies I'm thinking of treating, for now:

- Glory, Moondancer, Majesty - whitening

- Skydancer - pink spot on side
- Sea Winkle - brown stains on body
- Bow Tie - brown stain on one leg

I'm curious about this, too. I know it works. The only thing I've tried it on is my white baby carriage. With the Texas sun, I only needed a couple of days for each item I soaked. It looks brand new. It even lightened up some yellowed glue. I just haven't been brave enough to try it on any ponies.

Yeah, I'm wondering if the peroxide treatment might be overkill for just one spot. *shrug* But I really want to clean up my ponies!

I've only peroxided a few ponies. Raspberry Jam was done by herself. I had 3 white bodied that I re-used the solution on (one was majesty/glory/baby moondancer). No issues in that respect.
I don't think it will be overkill for one spot, but we're finally having some sunny days so I hope you won't give up all hope on regular sunfading.
I have a long haired AJ in the window with orangish pink marker allover her and her marks have faded over the last few weeks she's been out...

Good to know! Speaking of Raspberry Jam, I wonder if the peroxide bath would hurt her scent? She does still smell quite nice. The smell is in her hair, not her body, right? Mine is all stained and she'd look perfect if not for it. Maybe I could tie up her hair and submerse her only as much as needed.

So can you submerge a pony with factory hair under peroxide and it not ruin the hair? What about glitter symbols? Sorry about my questions but I haven't heard much on this way to lighten ponies.

That's what I was worried about. The hair.

Ok i have found a soultion to the hair thing.. tho its a lil strange.
there is a hair care place here in LEX ky that sells REALLY strong .. hair bleaching grade peroxide.
the nice thing about it is.. its gelled
Meaning it has the consistancy of dippity doo.
So.. i tried this trick with my moondancer and it worked..
shes white as snow now.. here she is..

here is what i did.. got some of this goop..
and cut some paper towels into long thin strips..
soaked them in the goop for about two hours.. while they were soaking
moonsy got a good scrub down with some dawn and a magic eraser to get rid of the worst of the dirt.
Then i took those soaked strips and basically mummified her.
Left her for about threedays.. pouring on some watered down of the peroxide a couple of times.
when i de mumified her.. she looked great!
and as you can see her hair was untouched.
you can find this stuff at the sally hansen beauty stores.
best of luck.

That's a great idea, RosePrincess! I've used the peroxide bath for a few ponies, most recently UK Gusty. She came out very white, but I wanted to make sure the peroxide was well removed from her body and hair by soaking her for a few days in distilled water, changing the water every day. Then I made sure I REALLY conditioned her hair, since peroxide is quite drying.
I did baby Moondancer quite a while ago, and the bath didn't affect her sparkles from what I saw. I was trying to bleach out the cancer, and it did well for a while but the spots came back after about 3 months :(
I wouldn't use the peroxide to "wade" your pony in. The peroxide will bubble out the microscopic dirt and oils that have accumulated in the plastic's pores, so you'll definately end up with a water line no matter what color you're using it on.
Be careful using it on ponies with brightly colored or neon hair, however. The neon has a tendancy to bleed and can stain the pony!

I've done Hydrogen Peroxide treatment once on a Baby Moondancer. If you want I can give you the results of that (I'll likely be in the morning because now I have to go to bed orz)

I will have to try that gel stuff!

For now I'm starting with Glory. I've read that the peroxide won't hurt glitter symbols and whitening seems fairly simple. She's in a vase sitting out on my balcony.

And I would love to see some before and after pics! That should get me nice and excited. :)

My raspberry jam didn't smell so I'm not sure how H202 affects scent. She certainly changed color though!
Here's Majesty... Beware, eyes may fade!

These pics don't show how yellow she really was, this was after a good scrubbing...

After the soak she lightened up more (and got new hair!).

She looks great, thanks! :D

Still not sure if I want to attempt my scented ponies. I'll have to give that some thought; it would actually really bother me if they lost their scents.

I do remember that you like your scented ponies to smell fantastic!
It's so very common for them to be yellowed that I wonder if it honestly bothers most people...?
