Help? Need transparent background
« on: May 11, 2014, 06:23:43 PM »
Me and digital art do not get along :( I made this in Art Rage without thinking. I want to use it as a forum sig elsewhere but the canvas background shows. I loaded it into GIMP but I can't figure out how to make the background transparent. Can someone help? I just want the kitty silhouettes to show.

I haven't used GIMP, but you're going to have to go in with the eraser tool and start erasing the white background or try using the magic wand tool (if it has that) and selecting outside of the cats and deleting the selected content (which might delete a bit more than you want). Save as either a .gif or a .png to keep transparency.

^used the magic wand tool in Photoshop to delete the white background then saved as .png.

Oh, thank you! :D

I hadn't thought of that. I'm so bad with graphics programs

Thanks again!

Always save as .png (or gif) for a transparent backgroud :)
I do it like this, when making a new picture:

make a new document. the "background layer" will by default be white (or whatever colour you've selected for background).
Then I make a layer on top of it, and draw what I want on that layer.
Then I delete the whole backgrund layer (in Photoshop you can just drag it to the little dustbin, I don't know if you can do that in Gimp). Since layers are transparent (except where you've drawn), you'll have a picture with a transparent background, just like that :)
Save as .png or .gif :)

Shaiyeh gave some sound advice!

Since you already have a picture with just one layer, you can use the "color to alpha" function to make the BG transparent. My GIMP currently has Finnish menus but there should be a drop down menu under "Colors". I think white is chosen by default so it should be a piece of cake, especially since your picture conveniently has only two colours. However, you may need to add the alpha channel from the layer settings first (Layer > Transparency > Add alpha channel -- I hope this is what they're actually called in English! :D ). Good luck!
