Need advice on possibly ruined ponies...
« on: May 09, 2014, 03:35:39 AM »
 I am very upset atm so please excuse  any typos.

First info-
A while back I found a free wooden shelf, so I picked it up for my ponies and MH dolls...well I have been ill due blood pressure issues and had not fused with the small amount of my heard on it.

Issue-
tonight to my horror I went to stand some that my cat had toppled and saw they had weird brown marks on them. Apparently the stain in the shelf came off on my ponies is small patches. I tries acetone to get it off and scrubbing with soap and water. My hubby will get magic erasers tomorrow so I can try that...Bu I am so sad 8 of my heard may be forever ruined. Really have no idea what to do I can't afford to replace them. And a couple where faves.  The odd thing is it had no effect on the monster high dolls or anything else on the shelf.

I had that exact issue. I couldn't get the stains out no matter what i tried. And i tried a fair few things. I didn't try magic erasers but acetone wouldn't budge it as it had soaked into the plastic/ Luckily it was just on the under side of the hooves so i've put some craft foam sheets on that shelf now to stop it happening again.

How much damage has it done? As i said, mine was only on the underside hooves that had been in contact with the shelf.

what part of the ponies were stained? you might try and see if sunfading might help.. it if was just the bottom of the feet then don't worry about it. I had the same thing happen with some of mine.. but it was furniture polish that caused the stain, luckily it was just the bottom of the feet.

Yeah, I'd try sunfading before giving up! Or, since it's apparently wood stain, maybe paint thinner or mineral spirits? I'm not sure what that would do to the plastic.

If it's just under the hooves, that's very minor and most collectors could care less.  I would put some kind of covering on the shelf - a thin sheet of Plexiglass or something.

If it's from furniture polish, I found this website:
http://home.howstuffworks.com/how-to-remove-furniture-polish-stains.htm
It doesn't say anything about plastics, but has some other ideas that might be worth a try before abandoning hope on them.  **I didn't read the entire article and cannot claim to know what any of the chemicals suggested will actually do to a pony... I cannot vouch for the effectiveness or safety of ANY of these methods!**

And here's a link that explains how to remove wood stain (if it's stain, rather than polish) from vinyl siding.  Again, it's not the same as ponies, and I cannot tell you the safety or effectiveness of how this would work, but it might be worth a try!
http://www.ehow.com/how_4840369_remove-wood-stain-vinyl-siding.html?ref=Track2&utm_source=ask

And please, if anyone knows if anything that I've linked to is simply a terrible idea, please let me know!  As I said, I have no idea if any of the methods would work, but I just hate the feeling of ponies being ruined forever!

Thanks everyone. Most of them it is just on the feet which I don't care about but like 5 my cat had toppled and it is on the face and side.... I may try the suggested removals on a fakie  I have to make sure it is safe. We moved everyone and we are going to paint the shelf and put a liner on it as well.

I agree; don't give up just yet. Try every avenue open to you before you think they are not fixable. Unfortunately some chemicals, especially things like stains and dyes, can get right into the actual pores in the plastic and that's why they are impossible to shift with acetone or the like. I would give the magic eraser a try and a sun fade. If neither works you could try some other chemicals knowing that its at least some kind of option - carpet shampoo and kitchen/bathroom surface cleaner.

There's some great advice. I've had this happen to a few of my collection. Had them on 3 large pine shelves, now we're talking 150 ponies I had at that time, random spots of the pine seeped so it affected random ponies in random feet spots. I feel your pain. Worse comes to worse which ones got it on their faces that you may want to replace? Bummer. :o(

Yeah I think I may replace the ones where it got on the face thank the gods it was nothing rare that was ruined. ;_; but I was very attached to the Snuzzle and Peachy.

Edit- I will try all means of fixing them first.

Well you don't have to get rid of the Snuzzle and Peachy, just buy two more as the nice looking ones to display and keep the others with a different group.
