Question on Pony Pattern
« on: May 06, 2014, 11:42:40 PM »
I just won an auction for the Butterick Firefly Pattern. I intend to try to make a pony or two. I know the pattern is a tissue paper like material. Can I laminate it so it would last longer, or will that destroy it? Is there another tip for saving the pattern? Also, can anyone teach me how to sew?

Maybe scan it into a computer, in parts? That way you can just print off the pattern instead of using the proper pattern. Not sure about laminating, but you may be able to very carefully cover with clear book cover/contact :D

I've never used that pony pattern, but I have used a few clothing patterns. Personally, I wouldn't try to laminate it just because it's so delicate. If you do try, though, just be super careful! Cut out the pattern pieces, iron them on a low heat setting with no steam to get out creases, then laminate?

I traced mine onto tracing paper and used that or you could scan/print like suggested. I would be hesitant to do anything to the actual pattern but that's just me. :)

I would scan and print, and then keep it in the package on display ^^ That way I could use, cut, make mistakes, accidentally draw on or whatever the pattern, without destroying the original product :) Laminating such old thin paper feels risky to me :/

Pattern paper doesn't take well to laminating.  What I always do to preserve my patterns is to trace them out onto heavier cardboard, then you can use those pieces to create stuff from, and you only have to unfold that paper once!  Definitely scan the instructions, though!

Another reason not to laminate is it will screw up your measurements. Sewing patterns have a pre measured seam allowance (extra space for where the seam will be sewn), and laminate is going to mess with that because you need to allow extra space for the seal around the laminated object. All that would really do for a plushie pattern is mean it would be larger than normal.

The other problem is as others have said that sewing patterns are -incredibly- fragile. Laminating could very easily damage the pattern rather than preserve it.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll try to copy it to poster board and scan the pieces to my computer.

You guys are awesome! I knew I could count on you!

Want to add that if anyone has the Moondancer or Blossom pattern, maybe we can trade?

I would have said trace to paper- but scanning is a great idea if you are good with that, and thin printing on paper.

Laminating or using poster board would make it really hard to pin to the fabric I would think.

I simply use dressmakers paper - its relatively cheap to pick up and you just use the original pattern to create as many new patterns from that as possible. Then you can use the new paper pattern as designed pinned on your material. :)

I have that pattern!  I'm trying to make a corduroy Big Mac!  ... but got discouraged.  Thanks for this little bit of inspiration!

Agree that laminating is discouraged.
