Softer & more manageable Hair???
« on: April 30, 2014, 04:28:40 AM »
I've used DH Nylon & Katsilk saran, but neither one is soft enough or easy enough to style & manage.

Other than stripping bald a Barbie doll, like the one below, what can I use, and where can I get it???

Nylon styles quite well and easy once you get the hang of it. Often times it will need to have boiling water poured over to set some hairstyles. I use nylon on all of my ponies and I have done some pretty short and complicated hairstyles with it.

I agree that nylon is the best choice

have you tried hot water and conditioner to make the hair softer?

Another 'no issues with nylon' person. It feels different than some other kinds of doll hair so maybe if you're not used to it it might take some learning/adjusting. But I find it nice and soft and easy to work with and style. Is there a particular style that you're going for that's giving you difficulty?

Old Barbie doll nylon hair is much more softer than Dollyhair MLP though. The curls come out so soft and bouncy.

I haven't had an issue with the nylon MLP hair from Dollyhair either.  For some reason the neutral tones like brown, black and beige seems to be slightly more coarse to me and a bit less manageable, but for me they are definitely better than straight up saran.  It could be, if you are using old Barbie hair, that it has been worked more and so is more flexible and can more easily take curl.  I definitely have to do boiling water perms on many of my styles after re-hair.

It might depend how you're curling it? People curl nylon all the time, it takes curls really well and they can be made looser or tighter depending on the method and what you use to form the curls.

I also agree with bright eyes that if the hair you're comparing to is old that makes a difference. Comparing an old, well worn, probably brushed hundreds of time kind of hair to something that's fresh off the manufacturers spool is always going to be different. The nylon hair sold by DH does tend to relax and soften a bit after it's been brushed.

It was softer back then too when I got and made that doll. They just don't make it like that any more.
It was almost like baby hair back then. Curls or not, they just don't seem to make soft hair anymore.
Now it seems thicker and less angel soft. -_-

Thanks for all the input. I was just wondering if there was a higher quality nylon out there.
There only seems to be blonde at my craft store of that quality still left.

Oh well the hair you buy from a craft store is inferior to a nylon hair from a supplier like Dollyhair or RDUS.

Recycling the older barbie hair could save you money. If you could get a light blonde you might be able to see if it takes dye.
