I'm a beginner so this might not be the best advice, but I've had luck selling drops from the coliseum. Level your dragons until they can beat the training ground (the level 1-3 area) enemies in 1-2 hits and keep doing it over and over for quick victories. You can rarely get familiars, battle abilities, etc from it worth 1k+.
* If you get familiars and care about your completion/bestiary stats, they only count in your bestiary if you have them in your hoard/with a dragon. So if you sell them, they won't get counted until you get another, so you might want to wait for duplicates.

Also do the hourly things like the collection cart and high-low card game. Check the auction house to see if you can get the collection cart items cheaper than what she's offering

I've found the best way to make money is to breed your dragons and sell the hatchlings.
