Do you know the name of this children's book?

It's about a monster that doesn't fit in... or something along those lines. In an effort to find himself, he meets new people and things, and winds up making their hair stand on end. In the end, he gets a job at a barber shop scaring people's hair up so it can be cut.

Google searches have turned up similar but sadly not the book I'm looking for. Any ideas anyone?

That's all the info I have about it It wasn't a book from my childhood, it was a book from my boyfriend's. His copy blew away during the tornado. I was looking to replace it for his birthday.

Fantasticfiction is a great place to start for lists - sometimes it has a good description of the book itself and sometimes you at least get a name in order to track down a summary else where.
