Opening a vinatge factory sealed vinyl record?
« on: February 27, 2014, 06:56:16 PM »
What are your thoughts on opening a vintage vinyl record or anything vintage for that matter? I know once something is mine I can do whatever I want with it, I've just always had an issue with opening things that are older than I am, lol. I guess I figure if it's been sealed for that long, why should I break the seal now?

For the record (no pun intended), The particular album I'm looking at isn't THAT old, It's Stevie Nicks' Bella Donna. I guess it would probably be frowned upon by collectors if it were something really rare or collectible, but I'm guessing this album probably isn't super rare or anything and it would seem to me that I, being the first person to open it would get the benefit of superior sound quality over buying a used copy.

I don't understand the appeal of buying something only to keep it sealed/in the box/etc. If you want to listen to it, I definitely encourage doing so! :)

Great album and if you have a good turntable put it on play it.  After the Glitter Fades and Leather and Lace... Stevie rocks.

Look up its value, if it is worth lots don't open it.  If it isn't worth much open it and play it!  There is nothing like the sound of Vinyl playing on good equipment.

If you're buying it as an investment piece, then it makes sense to keep it sealed.

But if you just like the artist or the music or just bought it out of curiosity, I'd open it up and play it!  That's what records are for, after all!  :)

I don't buy things just to keep them in boxes and look at them.  If I can't listen to it or touch it, what's the stinkin point?  Release the Stevies and sing to the magics!

I'd give a quick slit down the side to take out the record and just leave the plastic on... Ah, vinyl...
