It's expensive and overrated, as are most "important" high school functions really.
This. Mine was $80!!?! I was like  :dropjaw: Are you KIDDING?

I didn't go to it either year, and totally don't regret it. I never had fun at any of those functions since I was single and ended up dancing with my friends or lurking somewhere. To be honest, I don't really think about high school at all, much less its dances. In a few years youll be able to go to bars and dance at your leisure for a $5 cover :P

I say buy ponies instead!

Go!  You can do a ton of people watching instead of dancing.  If you have a lonely or bad time you still have a story to tell, but if you can enjoy people watching and soaking up the scene you won't have a bad time.

We only had a Junior Prom and I decided to go at the last possible minute. I ended up boring this hideously HOT PINK dress. I just chilled with my friends since I didnt have a date.

The ticket was $50 and this was back in 1996

I never went to a single school dance. I haven't regretted it for a second.

I went to mine and had a good time and I'm glad I went!  I wish I had gone with a friend rather than a boyfriend though, because I went with a boyfriend to both my Junior and Senior Proms, and they both turned out to be total jerks hahaha.  I would have had better memories if I didn't go with a boyfriend :)

Ah, kids.

I never had prom. At all.  I think it was just our grad dance.  So if you have an opportunity to experience it, then go, because you will regret it later on <3

If you don't want to go, don't. It's really rude of people to say "prom is the best thing ever! you'll totally regret missing it" in my opinion because some people don't like those sorts of events. And that's totally fine! In the end, you should do what you want.

I'm not going to a single prom my school holds. Why? Because I don't like anybody in my school, I don't like dancing, I don't like loud places, I don't like formal wear(especially dresses, which many schools are extremely sexist and try to force girls to wear even if they're not comfortable in them), and I don't like being social unless I initiate it. It's just not my thing. And I get good grades and do my best at school. So it absolutely should not be an issue.

My prom was super lame.  But if I hadn't gone I always would have wondered if I would have had a good time.  And after prom was a ton of fun.  I'd say make an appearance even if you don't stay all night.  If you don't like it, then bail and do something more fun.

If you do decide to go make sure you and your friends keep their hands on their purses.  Sadly I saw so many purses in the bathroom trash bins because somebody stole them for the money inside. :(  I had money taken out of my purse as well but thankfully they didn't take the whole purse.  It had my wallet with important things in there and also my glasses.  I recommend either having only a wristlett to carry or ask a friend who is a guy to put any money you need to carry around in his pocket.  Also maybe bring a pair of flip flops too because many girls end up taking their heels off because they hurt so much!

I was a shy, quiet girl.  I asked a boy I like to my Junior prom but was polietly turned down.  I went anyway with some friends but they all had dates and went dancing while I sat there pretty as a princess.  A nice couple near the end of the prom came up to me and asked why I was sitting all myself.  I told them my story and the guy asked me for a dance (his date was happy to lend him out for a dance).  That was really sweet of them.

My senior year I did have a boyfriend/date to the prom so it was a lot more fun to dance and have fun.  Unfortunately that was also the year I had money stolen from me but it was still worth it.

My husband was never able to attend his prom.  It's something he regrets.  Whatever you decide just make sure you are okay with your decision.  There is no wrong answer as long as it's what you want. :)

I think that you should go! I did not go when I was in high school and wish that I would of. It something that I will never be able to do ever again in my life. And you don't have to dance to have fun at prom :)

I went to my senior prom and it was a total let down.  They rented too small of a place.  There was no where to sit to eat, and it was so crowded that you couldn't even move let alone dance, and it was too loud to talk.  A friend of mine talked me into it.

Luckly I didn't spend much.  I bought my dress on clearance the year before for cheap and I think tickets were like $50.

But I did drag Mori_lestrange to a homecoming dance once and that was fun. It started off with me chasing her down the sidewalk in a super long formal dress and heels (I don't do heels) when she tried to run away!

So as long as you have good friends that don't ditch you, any dance can be fun. And all of us were dateless and pretty antisocial.

I went for the very reason that "there's only one prom" and that I might regret it later. It was okay. I think prom is fun if you have good friends to hang out with, but not worth getting freaked out over if you miss it. I thought it was kind of lame, personally. I had friends, but I wasn't super social or into the dancing, so we didn't hang out much at the event. The dancing was just like any other school dance, the food was kind of blah, and there was NO water!! They offered Sprite instead for some reason, which is insane. (There might have been water somewhere if I looked hard enough, that's just unhealthy!) The best part is seeing all the fancy dresses, but you can do that for free by looking at everyone's pictures later.

The demented-looking guy [although he had a great smile!] from my homeroom was at my table and neither of us had dates, so we decided to be each other's "date." That was neat, because I had a small thing for him. But then he spent the whole time parading me for his friends, and talking about the intricate and grandiose yet remarkably clichéd book he was supposedly writing. I got a headache halfway through thanks to the loud music and lack of water, and kind of ditched him and went home. Kind of felt bad about that!

But yeah, prom is way overblown for what it really boils down to: a more expensive school dance in a slightly fancier building.
I'll put something here some time

If the only reason you're thinking about going is because people are telling you you'll regret not going.... you won't regret not going.

If most of your friends are going, you might regret missing out on sharing those memories with them. It will be something that, if it's important to them, they'll talk about and bond with people over in the future. If most of your friends aren't going, I suggest not going and instead finding something fun to do with your friends.

I spent prom at my friend's house playing Vampire: Masquerade and have never regretted it. Dances were a waste of time and money, and I never had fun at them anyway, with or without a date.
