CD Playback Problem
« on: February 18, 2014, 07:43:59 AM »
So, I quite often pick up second hand CDs

And yesterday I found a copy of the Pocahontas sountrack, and ripped it to my computer via itunes and then put it onto my ipod
Then when playing on my ipod I found it was horribly distorted, I tried a different pair of headphones just to check it wasn't that.
Then tried it just in my laptop both iTunes and Windows Media Player did the same thing. Really badly distorted crackly sound.

I've never had this happen with a CD before, I have no idea if it's the 'age' of the CD because I've picked up old cds before with no issue, and the CD itself doesn't seem as if it's damaged enough to cause it not to work properly.

Anyone else run into this?

I Googled and found that this happens with some audio drivers and many iTunes users were complaining about it. Have you tried to either rip or play it with Windows Media Player? I couldn't figure that out from your message.

Also, check your settings in the preferences of iTunes. The MP3 settings particularly. Maybe they were changed.

Well I played it in both players, but my initial rip was done via iTunes but both players gave me really bad feedback.

I placed it into my brother's laptop, which is an older MacBook and it seemed to play fine and rip fine so I think I've sorted it, it seems the CD didn't like my laptop, which is a fairly recent Asus model.

I did read that some audio drivers can distort cds. Google your model and see if there's a fix. :)

If it does it to any other cds I will, it's weird since this is a really new laptop so maybe it was just a random brainfart on its part

I had this happen with one of my Japanese singles - I never actually worked out exactly what the problem was, though someone once suggested it may have some sort of copy protection. But Pocahontas doesn't sound like the type that would...
I agree with the possibility of it being down to the drivers.
