What do you use as a photography back drop?
« on: February 14, 2014, 02:29:32 AM »
Unfortunately for me I'm not good at making light boxes, but I want to photograph my ponies and I want a bright white background.  I was wondering what people used? Any tips/advice is appreciated.

I use large sheets of decorative scrapbooking paper, I've also used fabric from a shirt.

I know someone had posted before about this before Christmas asking for suggestions and recommendations for a backdrop to photograph their ponies for sales purposes.

Certain materials can make white ponies look incredibly off white regardless of how white they really are. Some materials often used are cotton, satin, velvet etc. It's really a matter of your personal taste more than anything else.

Some people enjoy photographing their ponies outdoors, others like to have a white backdrop and a black backdrop.

I use a large sheet (maybe 9"x12") of heavy drawing paper (specifically Canson classic recycled drawing paper 80lb), posterboard would work too.  I lean it up against a dresser that has good light (leaning it against a wall would work too). I think the effect is pretty good even for white ponies and even better for colored ponies.

For playsets, I drape the back of a quilt and use that.  the effect isn't as good, since you can see the stitching, but I'm hoping to buy a few posterboards and use them side by side for the same effect I get with the drawing paper.  Hope it helps.

Also, I'm not sure what type of camera you use, or if this is all repeat info you already know, but it's important to white-balance your camera and use a tripod/put your camera on a stack of books.  I set my camera for delayed shutter release and a long shutter speed so I can use a low ISO and still get a higher aperture and better resolution photos without blurry-ness. Hope this makes sense!  I don't want to repeat, but if you need more photography tips, I'm happy to explain more in-depth.

I use a white towel or sheet.  I'll be switching to something more like black velvet for my plushies soon though - the black makes the paler colors POP.  I just wish that I got more natural light in my pony room (or that I was ever home during the day to take pictures).

When I have the patience to set it up I use a light box. The rest of the time I either use a well lit empty shelf on white book cases or plain old white card stock [the advantage of the latter is that you can get a nice soft bend at the base which really helps with appearance].

I made my own lightbox from a cardboard box and printer paper. Printer paper plays role of light-dispersing "windows", though it doesn't let much light pass through, so I need to put the lamps really close... but well, at least it was cheap, and works good enough.

I use the back-splash/counter in my kitchen. It is a a nice neutral color that complements all the ponies.

I use a roll of good quality wrapping/gift wrap. I tack the top up against the wall and let it drape down onto the floor to give a smooth background appearance. I use a wall with good natural lighting. I either use the white side or the printed side depending on what effect I want :)

You can try white foam core. I bet that would work really well too.

I use a black lace shirt on my black desk! I think their colors really pop against a dark background.
