« on: January 25, 2014, 06:52:57 AM »
I just saw carebears from 1991 at thrift and I CANT believe it!!! they are so different!!! hyper detailed tummy symbols!!!  different but cute face shapes!!

I was a teen -  "too old" for the bears at that time... please someone fill me in!  what did I miss?

I thought I saw something about "Environmental" bear?  maybe some sort of Captain Planet thing going on?

oh, and are they HTF?  maybe I should go get them?

Yes they were all about saving the planet in various ways. I'm not sure how hard to find they are. I know there weren't many and weren't in stores long. They were kinda like G2 ponies, not really all that popular when they were released because they were too different from the originals.

yeah, the "g2" of care bears wasn't around for that long.

the only two "newish" care bears to be released here were forest friend bar and america cares bear, but if im not mistaken they were already released over in the UK along with the first batch of bears.

here's a pics of them all:

hum..define '1990s' please.

The cartoon from the 80s was still going on super strong in the 90s..I was watching it up until I believe the mid 90s--after MLP stopped completely.

I think CB had a longer original run in Canada as most of the licensing was coming through Nelvana, a Canadian company.  So we probably got the '90's remix a bit later...

I'm not sure the year/series either.  but this toy said 1991 and it was different than any official CB I've ever seen.  when my girl first showed me I was like "meh, CB Fakie"... but then I did a double take when I saw it was official!

nope, completely official. they weren't around long and they seem to have been long forgotten over time.

out of curiosity, which bear did you happen to find?

The Environmentals have their fans (Dewprincess on this forum is one of the foremost experts on them) but they burn my eyes every time I look at them (I don't and won't collect them).

There was no new cartoon for this batch of bears, they just continued running the '80s DiC and Nelvana series (they didn't even modify the cartoon like Generation 2 Transformers did with the stupid Cybernetic Space Cube).  There were, however, books, Valentines, cards, etc. like usual.

They weren't the only Care Bears of the 1990s, as a Midwestern chain called Shopko put out a line of three bears in 1995 (these were not Environmentals) and at the tail end of the decade six beanlings came out (and sold well) which is what really brought them out of hibernation a few years later.

Also, of note, the white bear in the picture isn't America Cares (who didn't come out until the 2002 relaunch of the franchise) but Proud Heart Bear (yes, the reused the name from Proud Heart Cat).  There are two different versions - one with an American flag and a rarer Canadian flag variant (only available in the large 36" size).

Just noticed you have Friend Bear listed as Forest Friend (a different bear who was only available in the UK).

Here's a good reference guide for the Environmentals:

And here's Forest Friend:

And the matching Sea Friend:

Kingdom of Caring and Care Bears Forever are the best CB resources on the web:
