Greek question(s)

First... On my quest for Lemon Drops I finally overcame my lack of resolve and got myself this Greek lady.

I'm trying to decide whether or not there are two clearly different symbol variants, one with "light" (bluish) drops, the other with "dark" ones (clearly purple). (This page has a comparison shot.) I take it that mine is the bluish drops version? Her symbols are in really great shape and manage to look bluer in photos than in real life, which confuses me a little.

Second... This is not a question, more like an unpopular opinion - I fail to understand why people go crazy over the "vanilla" scent smell of Greek ponies! I think I remember that smell from my childhood... from cheapo stores that sell poor quality plastic goods. Certainly sweet, but a little nauseating and definitely not vanilla, doesn't give me the urge to sniff the pony. :P

The variation could be due to different batches of paint used :)

Here is my Lemondrop, she has very dark symbols with no bleeding.

True that, but if it's clear enough I don't see a reason to dismiss it as "just" batches. Thanks for sharing your photo. I've found the dark (purple) symbols to be less prone to bleeding, like on your LD.

For me the fact that the dark version is less prone to the bleeding [or at least we see the dark version and dont see the bleeding] is a bit of an indication to me its all meant to be the same pony. Red pigment in general is the least stable - the cheaper the dye the poorer the quality, the less stable it becomes. We can see in Greeks that red pigment does not like to stay in place - how many Bow Ties do we see with perfect in place symbols? I dont know if I have ever seen one without some degree of bleeding. The fact that the symbol versions are a purple [combo of red and blue pigments] and then a bleeding blue symbol version [i.e. purple which is suddenly missing the red pigment...the same pigment we can see bleeding into the surrounding plastic] suggests, as PKW says, its just different batches and all of them were originally that darker purple in shade.

As to the scent - I guess its an acquired taste [smell?!] I just think its pretty but I love vanilla so thats why I like it. Now if the ponies smelled of roses then *gag* I would not be a fan :P

Hathorcat makes sense, as usual.

I have nothing against actual vanilla, but the Greek pony smell... It could be that it's only my Lemon Drop that stinks, though, but more likely just me.

I think Greek Lemondrop was sold in 2 different ways: with the Show Stable & individually boxed, like the other collectors pose ponies. That could be an explanation for 2 distinct variations. ;)

My only Greek is a sad, poor condition Minty whom I fell in love with and bought for $10 from a newb on eBay. He's VERY cute...has dark blotchiness and his symbols are horribly misplaced, but he has no scent at all! I was so hoping he'd have that smell...oh well. He does have nice hair and no mmissing bits, so I'm happy with his unstinky self

It sounds odd but has she had a proper all over scrub? Sometimes oils get into plastic pores and it blocks out the smell; likewise popping the pony in a zip lock, leaving it open, covering with a thin towel and sitting her out in the sun can clear some of the issues and bring a scent back.

Yes, I've given her a goood scrub with a couple of different things...Dawn, toothpaste...the dark splotches are odd. They aren't cancer or anything, just...stains. Anyway, i'll try your suggestions!

In my experience, the Greek scent isn't anywhere near as distinct on the collectors pose ponies as on the unicorns/pegasi/rainbow ponies. A lot of those ponies entered collector ponies straight off the cards, so perhaps it hasn't dissipated as much.

That is right :) I have found the CP ponies don't seem to have as strong a scent as the rainbows. I do think the reason will be they haven't been out for as long.
