Luna Carving and Woodburning (incomplete but getting there)
« on: December 11, 2013, 03:39:50 PM »
First time ever carving on wood or using a wood burner so I know it shows haha but I did my Fluttershy pumpkin carving and it was fun and amazing so I thought...why not on wood? Any tips or advice would be appreciated. I know there are better bits out there to use but I used what I had due to delayed shipping on better tool bits. Enjoy i suppose!

Woodburning, cool! I can't offer any advice but I want to say it looks great already, especially for your first try! I can't wait to see the finished piece. :)

I am liking how this is looking so far! I dabble with a wood burning tool at times, but I dont know much about it.

It is looking really good so far, especially for a first try.  I can't say I've ever done much wood burning (just names and stuff on frames a long time ago, nothing fancy), so I'm afraid I have no sage advice here.  But I do like how it's turning out!  I think that carving around her was a nice touch.  :)

A little more done, started experimenting after I messed up part of it and now have my own permission to just have fun with it. My almost 3yr old daughter won't judge it and it's for her, so added some color even though not done sanding and I'll lay a darker color around carved out background, not purple grey but we'll see!

Thank you everyone, still a work in progress, I think I'm afraid of ruining it now and hesitant on touching it lol!

Well I didn't really intend for this much color but my daughter left me no choice with her pleading and her "helpful painting" in which she assisted me! Well, more like I watched her holding my breath and couldn't tell her "no", I mean this is meant for her and now that I got a slight hang of it, I will try something new on proper wood and with slightly more refined techniques. But I will say this isn't too bad for having no experience and it was fun. The depth and dimensional aspects are hard to see in photos and i may not have done them quite dramatically as an experienced person would know how to do. But here is, I think, the final result. Now my daughter, Danica, can say "good night moon pony" one more time before bed. (She says good night to all her life size wall decals and she loves saying good night to Luna, the moon pony) At least these off the scale colors will match her MLP coma-inducing room and it looks more appropriate for a toddler's room. I'm happy with it, but had it been going up in my collection...it would be different. Thank you everyone  for the support and comments, also, anyone have suggestions for next pony? I'm on the fence about a few and can't wait to start!

It came out beautifully! Even if there's more colour than you may have intended, I think the colours are subtle enough and very pretty. You did an amazing job on your first piece! As for the next pony... what about Celestia? :)

Thank you Griffin! And I thought about Celestia as being the natural choice due to Luna and Celestia's sisterhood and princessness. I think I'll give her a try but I'm not sure how to get her wood form resemble her in depth and all that. Worth a shot, as long as she looks like Celestia then I suppose she'd still be recognizable even if she appeared altered in other ways hahah!
