Build a Bear Show and Tell - How did you style their hair?
« on: November 30, 2013, 03:46:54 PM »
I recently tried to style my BAB Rainbow Dash after she came to me looking like this:

I guess she flew here so fast it messed up her hair :P

I was really nervous about fixing her hair because I didn't want to get the plush wet and I was so afraid of the dye from her hair leaking out onto her body! So I carefully conditioned it though I would have liked to have added more conditioner. It doesn't feel as soft as I would like. I put paper towel tubes in her hair to give her a curl:

I tried to wrap it in a way that the hair wouldn't be laying on her body, just on the paper towel. Again - soooo nervous about the hair bleeding onto her! Anyone who has had the G1 chartreuse/neon yellow color fade onto their ponies can understand my fear :P

So this is the outcome:

It didn't curl very well and I'm not even sure if I LIKE the curls :| I'm thinking I'd rather have it straight. So I would love to see your Build a Bear ponies and how you fixed their hair and PLEASE LET ME KNOW if the hair fades on the body so I know for certain

I think the loose curls are pretty cute! :) With Rainbow, though, yeah, straight hair would probably be the very best.

Don't have any styling stories here. If I pick up the Twilight and she still has glue in her tail, I'll be cutting that out and that will probably be the most styling I'll be doing. ;)

What a great idea to use the paper towel roll as a curler! I think she looks cute!

I like the curls.  Using the cardboard tube is a great idea!  I'm waiting for Rainbow and Twilight to come in the mail.  I'll have to try that when it comes time to style them.

Oooo! I'm looking for styling tips for straightening their hair, too. My Twilight has a stubborn ripple in her bangs from being tied with a rubber band at the store. I was also afraid to wet her hair or do much with it for fear of damaging the plush. Has anyone dared to try a straightening iron?? :faint:

I would be worried about how colour fast the hair would be and when I have been concerned about that on plush, I wrap them in cling film/saran wrap. Basically sealing them up like a mummy and just leaving the hair loose. Then tip her upside down and dipping the hair in a sink/basin of boiling water. Brush the hair flat in position and allow to dry [you should be able to brush it in position as the saran wrap should prevent water getting to the plush.

As for curling I think that method looks great Shenanigans! I love soft curls on ponies :)
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Thanks everyone! :)

Cat, that's a great idea about the saran wrap, I didn't even think about that :)

Did the flat iron do ok? The hair feels different than regular MLP hair so I wasn't sure whether or not to use one. Do you have any pics of your Pinkie?

I ended up cutting my Dashie's hair, but only a little on the bottom. Then I just brushed it out straight. Turned out really show accurate.

As for Pinkie, I wet and conditioned her hair to soothe some of the frizz (she went traveling with me, so she was a mess) and that worked out alright. The color didn't bleed at all, and I got a good part of her head and butt wet and she's fine. Then I braided and unbraided it to get it to go into little curls. That worked alright.

As for Twilight, I put a headband on her bangs for a few days to get them to lay down. They were sticking up something crazy! Otherwise she was fine, though. I built her myself so I made sure to pick one from the pile with good hair.

I'll try to remember to take some pictures later. :frog:

I was styling my fluttershy earlier and thought her hair was dry, how did washing turn out for you?
