I think it's more the lack of joints and the high price point. That and they are going for the same audience as Monster High who are releasing so many different dolls that people have hardly any money left for anything else. If they came out before MH or even early on in MH when there were only had a few waves at a time they might have had a better chance.

To me, for the price they were at ($20), they were a bit too expensive since you could barely move/pose them compared to other dolls such as Bratzillaz, Monster High, ect. I have been tempted to buy a few, but decided otherwise since I felt I could just a MH doll for that price and I could actually pose and do more things with (if that made sense). I feel if they were priced at around $10 to $15 they may have had a better shot.
