Original Price of G1 Ponies?
« on: October 23, 2013, 06:12:59 AM »
I was just curious about how much the average G1 pony cost when they were new on store shelves.  How about G2?  It occurred to me a few minutes ago that I have no idea how much they originally were, and I think that it would be interesting to find out.  Thanks in advance!

huh, I just realized something:  in the 1980's, minimum wage in my state($3.35 til 1988, so a pony= about1 hr and 15 mins work) was about the same as the cost of a pony. Now, minimum wage is  $8, and *still* about the same as the cost of one pony!

I've seen two different MIB Megan and Sundance sets on ebay. The US one had a price sticker saying it was originally $12.95, on sale for $9.94. And the UK one's sticker said originally £10.99, on sale for £4.99.

Now we know what drives minimum wage! I smell a conspiracy, Hasbro... *shifty eyes*

Seems like the regular ponies in the US were usually $3.99-4.99 and baby ponies more like $6.99 b/c they came w/ all the accessories.  The Pretty Parlor was around $11, Waterfall around $15, and Show Stable and Dream Castle around $20-24.99.

I spent a lot of time staring at catalogs.
Looking for CF Minty, excellent condition! (and maybe Snuzzle and Blue Belle)

So.... we are getting paid in ponies??

We've used gold dust & rum as quasi-legal tender, surely ponies aren't a stretch too far!

Single releases started out around the $4/£4 mark and over the years they drifted up in price some of the later ones are $6/£6/. The bigger boxed sets tended to start around the $7/£7 mark and again drifted up to $12/£12.

Not a crazy amount different from todays prices to be honest. Just goes to show how ponies have gone from being a more luxury or expensive toy to being a much more pocket change focused item.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

HOLY MACARONI!
17 mark was a really huge price back then! i have to agree, 9 euro sounds pretty low, but even 10 mark was so much back then! that clears up why i had not much ponies back then. ;)
going to the chinema was about 5 mark then, my pocket money was 1,50 mark. I just realized how worth has changed over the years and with the new currency.

anyone has an idea how much brilliant blossom was back then? it was such a big thing getting her for my birthday, i bet my granny spend a lot on her?

Well, i remember G2s being pretty cheap actually. The castle was 20€ i think, and my weekly allowance was enough for a pony, so yeah, cheap.

Why didint i buy more back then :faint:
