Is it possible to rehair a tail on a G4 princess mold?
« on: September 23, 2013, 11:22:59 AM »
La-la-la, I was going about my first ever batch of custom ponies, and doing pretty okay (or so I thought), but I completely missed the step where you remove the neck plugs.  Okay, no big deal, I got them out by breaking them apart, I figure that I'll just glue the heads on, perhaps with some sort of anchoring post (live and learn).

Shining Armor, no problem.
Rarity, no problem.
Pinkie Pie, no problem.
Princess Cadence... problem.

Is her body mostly solid??  If so, what do I do to get a new tail on her?

If not, do you have any suggestions for a good shrink I could see, because I'm clearly going crazy.

No her body is not solid, with any of the G4 alicorn molds you have to cut their wings out to get to their tails.

Heres a awesome tutorial http://liz-neko.deviantart.com/art/Epic-MLP-FIM-Customizing-Tutorial-Part-1-5-379252096

Oh no, what a mess! :( I am thinking of customizing my extra Cadance from the new favorites set and that will definitely be an obstacle, once I get around to it. Thanks for posting the tutorial!

Possible? Yes. Easy? Not so much. My pinklestia wound up in the bait bin because of that.

Aaaand walking even further away from my G4s now... Hasbro sure does make new and more frustrating ways to keep people from customizing their ponies... >_<

Yikes! You have to remove the wings in order to get to her tail? And I thought some G1s could be a pain.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Sure, Shabbyc, though to be fair, I'm COMPLETELY new at this.

For Shining Armor I wiped off his cutie mark (though I left his eyes since I like the shape and just painted over them), same as any pony then I boiled the bejesus out of him to get his hair off and out.

I tried to scrape most of the glue from his main... valley?  The troll hair leave a big trench when you yank it off.  I didn't get nearly all of it off, but if you rehair with lots of small plugs and you're careful to fill up to the edges, it's totally okay, the glue is hidden and under the paint it isn't even sticky!

The rest of the job is exactly what you'd expect.  Paint a million times, add custom bits (cutie mark, eye changes - mine went blue to green), seal, rehair, and put back together.

Sadly I ran out of hair, so I'm still working on this one.  I'll be placing an order for more later this week, I think.  :)  I hope to post pics when I'm done.  I learned a lot with this batch (AKA made a ton of mistakes, some of them obvious), but I'm not scared off.  I'm already planning my next batch!

thanks so much for letting me know :) wow what a job, i was considering rehairing my SA with nylon hair but just getting rid of the troll hair sounds like a mission.

It sounds worse than it actually is.  The hardest part for me was to get over boiling him.  I felt so badly and I was afraid that he'd melt.   :P

Yeah I don't think I could do it if I don't know how to rehair yet, agree it souds hard if not near impossible for someone like me anywayn
