Can dust stain ponies?
« on: September 20, 2013, 05:32:36 AM »
Yes, it may sound like a silly question, but I am actually concerned about it. Unfortunately my house gets pretty dusty and my ponies seem to suffer from it. I'm going to give them all a clean over when I can, but I don't always have the time to do....

I'm most worried about the white ponies for example Quackers. I'm thinking of starting to pack the away until I have proper shelving and I can keep them clean. So, can dust actually stain the ponies after a while? Or is it harmless?

I don't think it stains, but it does make their hair all snaggy when you brush it if you don't wash it out.

I don't see dust causing much harm, other than being a pain in the butt. I've been trying to keep all of mine in a display case so I don't have to dust them all the time. lol It's the up keep that gets to me. hahaha

I`ve seen some peoples collections with individual ponies in clear ziplock bags (probably to stop the spread of mold or cancer) They still display pretty nicely even in the bags.

Are they on an open front shelving unit? You could try getting the clear plastic that you use on windows to stop drafts and put it across the front of the shelf like a glass panel. The dust wouldnt get in but you could still see them really well.

the only problem with ziplock bags and   with  plastic cling wrap is the moisture  that gets in and the condensation on the inside can mold the ponys..

You can get silica packets to keep out the moisture

i keep all my MIB ponies in those acid free comic book bags that seal, they fit perfect and it keeps all the bugs and moisture out of them, and keeps the boxes from getting worn and raggedy

ZIP-locks are bad to store ponies in because they are not acid free, they can either go sticky, or crumble and dry rot, i have seen them do both but it depends on the storage conditions,

and remember that silica packs have to be fresh not used! they only hold so much and if you get them out of something like a pill bottle or something then they will be spent and won't suck up much water from the air,

i did see that the dollar store sells big moisture absorbing packs for a dollar though. they really help because i live in a really wet area

Heres my thought:
I wouldn't worry about staining.
If your wanting to dust less or just keep the air cleaner for your ponys & you, I would suggest buying a air cleaner to run in the room. I think I paid around 50 or so for mine and I can tell the difference in the air vs. the rooms that don't get the air cleaned. They are quiet enough and They help reduce the amount of dust build up by a lot. Just remember to clean the filter every so often.

Mine get dusty all the time *sigh* I don't think it does any lasting damage. Just you have to clean them more.

Perhaps you could put clear plastic or a pretty sheet over them if you're concerned. The only dust I've seen stain items is dust from the kitchen...greasy dust is AWEFUL to get rid of!

Dust can cause damage to hair as it can mean the hair will break when brushed. The easy solution is literally to shake a ponies hair out and softly wipe it before brushing if a pony has become particularly dusty.

It cant stain per se but what it can do is become ingrained dirt over time; but it has to be a significant amount of dust, a reasonable amount of time and it is also removable with the same old ingrained dirt removal tutorials.
