What do I use to make more plugs?
« on: September 08, 2013, 08:49:27 PM »
I had a huge safety pin - more the size of a diaper pin - that would do the job for me, but in my move I have no idea were it went. So what else can I use to open plugs after a ponies been painted and sealed and to add new ones? I'm making a pony that needs more plugs on the top of the head.

I usually just use a straight pin. I just yank one out of my pincushion, jab jab jab, then back into my sewing kit with it.

Finishing nail, push pin, heavy duty sewing needle... those all work well

Yep, the same needle I rehair with. It's a doll needle.

would it be the sharp end of the needle? I just ordered new needles but @ the same time don't want to break off the part the plugs the hair in. Did that too many times learning the reroot with the reroot tool.

Ye, I use the sharp end. I don't use the tool method. I use needle and thread. But you should be able to make new plug holes with just a thick needle.

i use dollar store embroidery needles :/
they break a lot, but they do the job.
i have two tools that i made out of stuff i had lying around. a broken cuticle pusher with an upholstery needle superglued in it and an exacto knife handle with the actual reroot tool in it.
which is actually a needle i clipped the eye in half with my pliers.

For me personally, I found that the replacement needles I ordered broke far too easy, and that was on holes that were already in the pony. We just buy large packs of needles and my husband takes the largest needles in the pack and cuts them down for me and I've been using the same rehairing needle on the last 5-6 ponies with absolutely no problems (no bending, no breaking).

I am careful when making new holes to use something like a push pin just in case. Everyone has there own way of doing it, you just have to find what works best for you.

I used the plastic based poster tacks before I cut specific needles for my tool. If I'm in a bind that's what I would use again. I cut down thick upholstery needles to use in my tool now.
