Need some Doll re-rooting advice?
« on: August 21, 2013, 04:03:18 PM »
Hey all, I need to turn to the dolly community to ask for a bit of help.

I am tasked with rehairing a vintage Strawberry Shortcake doll...

The person would like her hair to look like this one, on the far left of this photo:

Now, I was thinking that I could redo it with straightened yarn, but, any other suggestions on what material I should seek out for this? And where I may find it?

Thank you all!

it seems that those dolls have mohair... rooted? usually i see mohair as wigs, but i guess you could root it if you tried, hmm....

etsy has a lot of sellers that sell mohair, if you search for "light blue mohair" you might find something like what you need.

It does look like mohair, it is possible to reroot mohair, just need to be very gentle with the rehair tool.

Or you could use a wig if you wanted.

Thinking about it, brushed out yarn would look very similar and possibly easier to rehair with.

I have a spare head they also sent me, I am going to practice with the yarn I found, but go on the hunt for mohair this weekend... I think if I really was gentle, spun it and glued it, it MIGHT be possible. I have absolutely no way of making a wig, I think I HAVE to reroot... I can take a photo of the head once I bait it so maybe you guys can see? :)

Thanks all!

With dolls you probably are going to want to paint the scalp the color of the hair and seal the head after painting before you start rerooting. :)

You might also want to consider rerooting it with the needle and thread method instead of a reroot tool.  Up to you of course.  I guess just try several ways and see what is going to work best for the materials.

The mohair they are rooted with is the locks, rather than the roving they use for spinning. If comes either dyed or you can do it yourself ( http://www.puchicollective.com/tutorials/blythetutorials/rerooting-mohair/  use RIT and be careful not to boil too long!). If you use a doll making needle and loop of thread to pull it through, like I do, make your plugs while it's wet and keep it wet while you work with it to avoid breakage.

Er... whew! Feeling a bit overwhelmed trying to figure this out. I'm going to experiment tonight on the extra head I was sent... the first thing I'm trying is this yarn I have that's similar in color to what they want... and see what it looks like when I'm finished. For now, the rehair tool will be my first try, as I'm comfortable with it... but, if it comes down to getting it in mohair, painting the head, etc... I dunno, it seems scary to me!! :yikes:

I think if they had a hat like the photo above... that the hair I picture doing with yarn could work... but I'm worried I'm going to turn it into a troll!!
