Drawing eyes! :)
« on: August 09, 2013, 08:45:51 PM »
May anyone kindly share their experience in pony eye outlining? :)

Do you use a high-quality brush with a very fine tip or perhaps anyone even tried using pens/markers, etc.? And if pens, what type/brand you reckon are the best?

A fine brush and a steady hand.

I tried a couple of different things when I was first starting out in ponies and I always came right back to a good old brush and paint. I know there are some people who use paint pens, but I have never been able to get a good level of control with paint pens, plus there really aren't paint pens fine enough to get really delicate lashes.

I agree with the above. Painting eyes seems impossible at first with that tiny brush but you get the hang of it. I'd recommend getting a bait pony you can use strictly for testing things out on. Test your painting techniques and such on that pony till you get the hang of it. That way you're not worried about messing up a project with something you haven't done before.

I've used gel pens (don't recommend)
I've used toothpicks and paint before I had access to a nice tiny brush
now I use the small brush offered by dollyhair :)

I use Micron pens, typically. They offer more control for me, I have a pretty rough touch. XD; You just have to be careful to not touch it right away, it will smudge when it hasn't dried properly!

I use an india ink pen (Faber Castell's Pitt artist pen). It works great, but the nib will get clogged/dry out if you use it over paint. Otherwise the good old fashioned tiny detail brush works wonders.

If I'm just doing black eye detail, I like to use the fine tip Gundam paint markers that you use when doing panel detailing on a Gundam kit, mostly because I already have them on hand.   If I'm doing a custom that requires a different color, I'll use a fine paintbrush, a toothpick, or a dotting tool (it's a metal-tipped, double-sided tool that's used in nail art).  There are a lot of ideas for things you can do!

I've seen people use Watercolor pencils for monster high customs but I have no idea if it works on pony plastic as well!

I just bought a thinner brush for eyes yesterday! I was doing okay before, but the outer line and eyelashes on the eyes were killing me! I hope the thinner brush helps.

I use a 20/0 liner brush with airbrush paint for lashes.
