Glitter?
« on: July 25, 2013, 09:37:21 PM »
How would you put glitter onto a pony in a way that doesn't flake off, yellow, or start to crack over time?

I want to put some glitter on just the horn of a unicorn, so it would be best if I could paint it on, not spray it on.

To be honest, the Michael's Craftsmart glitter paint works surprisingly well! I bought Martha's and Craftsmart to compare and preferred the latter's denser glitter. That's what I used here:

I use Folk Art's glitter paint, the Hologram one.  This girl has 2 coats of it on her body and 4 on her wings.

I also like the FolkArt glitter paint, or if I want very dramatic glitter, I mix glitter with some triple thick and paint it on. I haven't had any long enough to know if it will crack or yellow, but I don't think it could be worse with glitter than on eyes like people use it and I don't know of anyone who's had trouble with that.

I use Triple Thick Gloss over a base coat of matching color. Use a brush you want to throw away, it will be ruined. Pour a puddle of Sealant, Pour in loose glitter, then have a pile of dry glitter on the side so you can tap it on to the open spots too. Keep your brush wet with sealant at all times.  Let EACH layer dry for about 5 hours. Apply more until you get the desired glitteryness. Then apply a final coat of Triple thick.

Most of my glitter ponies are about 10-15 layers.

It is ALL about filling all of the gaps between the glitter with more glitter. And patience. And a shop vac. There will be glitter all over for DAYS.

Hope that helps!

ETA: I have my first Glitteratii pony I made when I started customizing I guess about 7 or so years ago---she has not yellowed or cracked. Just as nice as the day she dried! Oh and you can wipe this stuff down too once it hardens it becomes pretty water resistant.

Thanks so much for all of the suggestions, guys! All of these customs look great!

For my purposes, it sounds like a glitter paint will do just fine. I don't need a super lot of the stuff, just a subtle accent.

Those super glittery ones are crazy, BarbedDragon! Thanks for sharing your technique with me. Maybe I'll try something like it when when I have some time to experiment.

I use clear nail varnish and sprinkle loose glitter on top of it - while it dries.
It seems to work really well for me.
Saying this I only use this technique for small areas like symbols or eyes - It might be too complicated for a full body glitter.

xx
