Help with decorating hair with pins...?

I don't even know how to explain what it's called?

My mom wanted me to re-hair a Sugarberry she bought at the fair. So of course I got all done and then she's like you didn't make it pretty...

Apparently she saw all the customs where the hair is curled up on top of the head and held in with pins etc.
Only problem is I don't have any idea how to do that and can I do it now? Or should I have added more hair already?

hmm great link! ive been pondering fancying up hair too... quick question! are you making sure to put the pins into the plugs or are they just ramming them into the head wherever? im hesitant to turn a FBRd custom into a pincushion... what if I decide to take the hair down or change it later?!

I swear someone mentioned to me once how to use the pins without sticking them into the pony...
