Has Anyone Been To Egypt? Feel Free To Post Pics.

Egypt fascinates me, especially the history.  I've always wanted to visit there but not sure I could stand the heat.  Also, if I was in the desert I would be paranoid of scorpions, snakes and spiders and stuff or bandits. 

I was wondering if you're allowed to go and visit pyramids or tombs or do you have to get a permit or permission from the police or something?  Also, I think some of the cramped spaces inside some of the pyramids would freak me out.  I know I'm talking like I've been there, mostly assuming. 

If people have gone and explored pyramids please tell about your experience and post pics if you want to.

I'm curious too I know Stonehenge you can only see from a distance, it'll be interesting to know how close you can get to the pyramids.

I looked into a trip there, and apparently the touristy areas are dangerous and dirty? It's been a few years since I looked, so I'm not sure if it's the same now . But I have always wanted to go!

I've never been there (nor do I wish to!), but my best friend has. She said it was pretty awful. The urban area has spread to the pyramids so it's very far from being in the middle of the desert, it's quite dirty according to her.
But her biggest problem was with how women (including herself) were treated. She was constantly harassed even though she was dressed "appropriately" according to their culture (which I imagine was not entirely fun in their sun), and the whole cultural shock has overwhelmed her experience.

so please be careful if you're going!

I've been there... and exactly this. I was treated appaulingly. I do have some nice photos though, I'll post them up later

*nods*  I would have loved to go but at the moment it sounds like its a dangerous area to be in.  Shame, its also a very pretty place.

That's a real shame about how women are treated and how horrible it sounds as far as the environment.  I had no idea you couldn't actually go up to stonehenge and can only see it from a distance.  I get that who is in charge probably doesn't want people to vandalize.  It's a part of history and no one seems to know who actually made it or how it got there. Sort of the same with pyramids.  How did they make the blocks so perfect and the pyramid shape is perfect.

I didn't plan on going, I mean unless I knew someone who was going.  I'd be too scared to go by myself and I don't really have the funds to go.  But hearing about it I don't think I want to.

I love the movie The Mummy with Brendan Frasier.  I've always wondered if there was some truth to the movie.  I don't necessarily mean mummies coming back to life, but maybe an ancient city or books buried underneath the sand.
