Fixing Moonstone
« on: June 18, 2013, 09:06:26 PM »
I got an especially yucky batch of BAITs.  They came from a tobacco home, and they were really stinky.  I had the kids wash them outside in their swimming pool, then I soaked them in OxyClean and scrubbed them with the Magic Eraser, shampooed them, wiped ink spots with acetone, and sun dried them.  They look pretty good now and hardly any trace of tobacco smell.  But Moonstone here has some bad spotting.  I liked that enough of her marking was intact I can fix it, but unfortunately alot of the spots are right where the markings are.  I'd like to maintain her identity as Moonstone, but not sure how to handle the spots.  Any ideas? visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I'm not an expert.... but I think those spots are cancer. It certainly looks like the pictures of pony cancer I've seen.. just a LOT more of it!

Wow. Really bad cancer. Never seen a pony like it!
I recommend keeping her away from your other ponies. Also, try spray painting with an airbrush to her original colour, and getting a stencil, and handpainting her symbols. Many members here charge very reasonably to do this, I can recommend Gotbunny who made me customs. :)

Poor girl!  This is one of those cases where "a little restoration" probably isn't going to work.  She would be a good custom base at this point, and even a restoration is going to cost you a lot more money than a new Moonstone.  On the bright side, there are usually customizers interested in turning her into something new and beautiful.

I think it is actually brown mold staining cause there are dark spots in the middle of light spots.  Hard to show in the photos.  http://mlppreservationproject.com/body.html

I was thinking maybe if I paint over her symbols with black paint, then I could paint her body and enough of the black paint would show through to guide me in re-glittering her symbols?  I figure she's a good candidate for learning on cause I can't make her look any worse. :D

I had a Starshine like that once, except her spots were way darker and it was in big blotches.  :drunk:

that could work well. and like you said you cant make her any worse. it'd be good practise and moonstone isn't horrendously HTF. :)

This might have been a nutty idea, but I was reading that some artists use oil pastels on vinyl.  I'm reading to let it cure cause the oil will seep into the vinyl.  Decided to try it, if I don't like it, I can scrub it off and paint...visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Just a heads up, oil paint won't work on ponies. Stick to acrylics! :)
