Which re-hairing tool is the best???
« on: May 30, 2013, 03:59:10 PM »
I am brand new to this & have never ever done it before so I have no idea which tool to buy. So, tell me which re-hairing tool to buy from where...... I can't wait to try re-hairing, but I just need to figure out which tool is the best one to buy. Any & all advise is welcome :) Please & thank you so very much.

I have BarbedDragon's silver rehairing tool. It's great, easy to switch between poker and hairing needle.

I also have Retrodolls US's rehairing needle but the needles I was sent don't fit ponies at all. Good construction if the needles fit.

I use my rotary tool to make my own out of tapestry needles and put them into a hobby knife handle.  I've broken more in the crafting stage than in the actual usage. ^^;

Just wanted to add a question here, where do you get the tools from?

I would say that Pop Girl's re-hairing tool is the best. I have yet to break a needle and it is just simply a beauty to work with.

Genuiensqueak: just message one of the people mentioned for more info on their tools. =)

So far it's:

Maniah
Pop-Girl
BarbedDragon

RetrodollsUS and Dollyhair are hair suppliers that also carry tools.

I made mine out of an embroidery needle and a craft-knife handle for under $5.  It's a bit of a pain to turn the needle back and forth, but I got used to it fairly quickly, and it was cheap.

I just use a really nice x-acto handle i found once. I love this thing

its retractable so, i can pull the needle all the way in for storage and not worry about it getting bent or whatever, or i can push it all the way out for easy changing. :) Iv been using this for 2 years and its really great.

its also not totally hollow, so I dont have to worry about the needle pushing itself in if it gets loose, all i have to do is cut my needles to length and they stay put. it also stays nice and tight since the "working" position keeps the screw tightener pit covered, you're not accidentally unwinding it with your hands. ^~^

I found this in a jo-annes but they probably sell them at any craft store, sorry I cant remember the price. I want to say $7, which might seem like a bit but it also came with a couple blades lol.

ill also add, originally i only bought this because it was the only x-acto handle that had the "+" shaped blade slot, i strongly suggest that because it will hold your needle really well.

I agree, I make my own.  That way there's no fuss if it goes missing or a needle breaks.  I just snip a new needle, sand a bit, and ready to go!

How do you make your own needle????

Cut the eye of a needle on an angle with wire cutters.

I made my rehairing tool out of a double ended pin vise.  You can pick one up on Amazon for cheap.  I put the cut needle at one end and a regular needle on the other so I can open up the plug holes without needing to switch tools.

The needle and thread method is a good way to go if you do not have any doll hair tools.

I use dollyhair's tool and a pushpin to make plug holes bigger. Never tried anything else, and it works fine for me, so why fix what ain't broke.
When the Equestria Girls dolls show up in stores and you end up with unneeded doubles, PM me! I'll buy them!/i]
